What the job involves

  • UI Foundation is a central, cross-platform team at Airbnb responsible for improving client-side engineering efficiency, quality, and capabilities that enable product teams to build a premium quality, modern, fresh, and design-rich UI
  • The team empowers product engineers by building capabilities such as the Design Language System (DLS) building blocks, UI Tooling, Motion infrastructure, accessible patterns, and custom declarative UI frameworks built on React, Linaria, SwiftUI, and Jetpack Compose
  • In this role, you will have the opportunity to influence how UI engineering is done at the company level and to support the efforts of hundreds of other engineers
  • The UI Foundation team works in all stages of the product development lifecycle, aids in product launches, and works closely with the Design organization on new UI initiatives
  • It sits under the Client Foundation organization whose scope is to standardize and accelerate the overall feature development process from a client engineering perspective
  • As a Staff Web engineer on the UI Foundation team, you'll have the opportunity to work with world-class engineers and designers on the next generation of our Design System, building out new UI frameworks and utilities used by other client-side engineers, and supporting new product launches by embedding yourself into product initiatives
  • You will need to have a Design-centric approach, coupled with a rigorous engineering mindset
  • You will be expected to go deep in Web Design Engineering, and align on architecture and principles with your cross-platform peers
  • You will be supported by a team of Design and Engineering managers, designers, and peer engineers. The scope of this role is vast and limited only by your ambition
  • You will be leading the continuous improvements to the overall process by which client-side engineers translate designs into code, at scale
  • In this role you will work closely with other engineers on Web, Android and iOS in building out systems and solutions that facilitate the overall engineering process of building new features
  • Build efficient and reusable web UI infrastructure and architect reliable, performant, accessible and scalable solutions
  • Drive Technical strategy for UI development, including: identify areas of improvement and improve Web best practices
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners such as Designers and Engineers to design and deliver high-quality Motion animation and UI frameworks
  • Explore new Motion animation technologies to enhance general UI capability and meet Airbnb UI standard
  • Working closely with Web, Android and iOS engineers to develop foundational, cross platform solutions. Sometimes as a lead, sometimes as a peer
  • Scale impact through teaching, making presentations, peer programming and code/design reviews
  • Improve client-side developer efficiency
  • Support broader Airbnb Web community with a focus on UI and Motion
  • Make occasional direct contributions to Airbnb product, but this is not the primary role

Our take

When Airbnb was originally founded, the product helped customers book air mattresses on people's apartment floors. Since then, Airbnb has had over a billion customers hosted through its platform. With more than 4 million registered hosts worldwide, it has grown into a major player in the hospitality sector.

Airbnb has been successful in disrupting the traditional holiday lettings sector. Before it existed accommodation was limited to hotels and bed and breakfasts, but Airbnb has mainstreamed the idea of renting out spare rooms or even entire homes. It has created a new sector of hosts purchasing properties to rent out on the platform and provides a level of flexibility and a range of offerings not previously possible for travelers.

Perhaps a victim of its own success, by 2022 supply of Airbnb-listed properties began to outstrip demand in some markets, as hosts overestimated the appetite for domestic travel. However, the company is still posting strong financials and has unveiled new tools to support its hosts in a tougher rental market. With a healthy bottom line and a huge user base, Airbnb is very likely to overcome the current market turbulence and continue its growth.
