Role
Who you are
- A demonstrated track record of leading large technical projects that span multiple engineering teams and require multi-functional teamwork (we don’t have a hard requirement, but generally this comes with at least 10+ years of professional software development experience)
- Experience mentoring and training engineers across all levels
- Ability to scale solutions and build for long-term supportability
- Comfort with ambiguity and ability to drive projects from ideation through to completion
- Experience collaborating with both technical and non-technical cross-functional teams
- Excitement about our mission and a passion for solving problems to improve the healthcare financial experience
What the job involves
- As part of our vision to create a smoother patient billing experience, we are in need of a Staff Software Engineer to embed on our Patient Communications squad and lead technical strategy across multiple related squads
- Our team focuses on empathetically engaging with patients across various communication channels to help them understand and improve their healthcare finances
- We aim to balance the success of our individual clients with the ability to scale our platform and improve the experience for all patients
- Lead the development of high-impact product features across multiple squads
- Bring clarity to highly ambiguous projects and ensure we are building for long term maintainability
- Mentor team members at all levels and uplevel them through trainings and sharing best practices
- Identify and drive org-level changes to improve existing processes, infrastructure, architecture, developer happiness, etc
- Support colleagues on the product, design and commercial teams to understand patient problems and then formulate a technical strategy to solve for them
- Work autonomously and creatively in navigating and overcoming obstacles that you encounter

The subsequently low patient satisfaction rates lead to poorer care, and real losses for providers who see patients switching away from their plans. Cedar looks to remedy this long-time problem set with a selection of consumer-facing services which streamline billing, insurance, and healthcare processes.
Companies like Cedar are in high demand, and serve a promisingly large and hungry market. Future healthcare billing concerns a huge percentage of US adults, and optimizing patient satisfaction is of increasing concern in a competitive sector for healthcare providers. Like other companies with a tech-forward focus, Cedar has been able to capitalize on an industry increasingly expanding towards digital healthcare solutions.
After acquiring competing patient finance streamlining service OODA Health in 2021, Cedar has gone on to capture even more success. The company has netted substantial funds on top of the launch of its Payer Intelligence Layer, which allows it to integrate data from insurers and providers to create a single source of information. It was also endorsed by the Montana Hospital Association's shared services division MHA Ventures (MHAV), to be listed as its only preferred patient financial engagement technology, all boding well for its performance into the future.

Arel began their career as a technology associate at Bridgewater Associates, working on trading systems for the world’s largest hedge fund. Graduated from Princeton University with a B.S.E. in electrical engineering and a certificate in finance.
Dr. Florian Otto
(Co-Founder & CEO)Prior to founding Cedar, Florian was an executive at Zocdoc where they drove the commercial adoption of the platform. Florian also founded a daily deal company in Brazil (ClubeUrbano) that was eventually acquired by Groupon. After the acquisition, he became Chief Executive Officer of Groupon Brazil. Florian began their business career as a strategy consultant at McKinsey & Company within their healthcare practice. Florian holds a M.D., D.D.S. and PhD from the University of Freiburg, Germany.
