Who you are
- If you're excited to work on foundational systems that keep a robotaxi fleet running smoothly in the real world, we’d love to talk
- 8+ years of combined experience in device/edge software, cloud systems architecture and development
- Deep experience designing, building, and operating cloud-based microservices and cloud infrastructure (Kubernetes, Docker, etc.)
- Proficient in Python, Kotlin or Java, and REST APIs, with familiarity in C++, and proven experience building data pipelines and APIs between cloud and edge devices
- Strong systems thinking and ability to understand complex, cross-cutting architectures
- Proven track record of steering large-scale projects from initial concept through to successful deployment

What the job involves
- Zoox’s Robot Software Infrastructure team is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to help build the core platform services that powers the configuration and runtime settings system across our autonomous vehicle fleet
- Our team develops full-stack systems that manage startup behavior, runtime settings, and software/hardware configuration across vehicles and cities—ensuring safe, consistent operation at scale
- Example Challenges:
- How should a vehicle determine what to do when it wakes up?
- How can a fleet coordinate updates across time zones for 24/7 service?
- How do we detect and recover from misconfigurations in runtime?
- You'll design and build robust embedded applications and web microservices for the configuration and runtime settings system
- Develop startup-time and runtime auditing/control of software and hardware settings
- Own service architecture that connects vehicle and cloud for dynamic configuration
- Drive technical direction and lead large-scale, cross-team projects with independence and critical thinking
- Collaborate and communicate effectively across cross-functional teams, including vehicle software, tools, and operations, to drive successful project outcomes
Our take
Zoox, a self-driving vehicle company, was founded to make personal transportation safer and more enjoyable for all. It has aimed to achieve this goal by creating a new mode of driverless transportation, thus eradicating the safety and logistical issues that come with human drivers.
It revealed its custom vehicle design in December 2020, showcasing something different from just a car without a driver. Uniquely, all four wheels are independent of one another, and the vehicles have no front or back, making them more agile than a standard car. Zoox claims that it is different from other industry players because it has created an entire driverless ecosystem, including the vehicle itself, allowing it to have more control.
The company is fast becoming a major player in an industry that is predicted to be worth $2 trillion by 2030. Electric motors are highly desirable, particularly in an urban environment, as governments look for ways to reduce emissions and improve air quality. Zoox is aiming to play a vital role in this evolution towards more sustainable urban mobility. Amazon acquired the company in 2020 and, despite a general downturn in the sector through 2022, opened its first Zoox factory for robotaxis in 2025, and is testing the autonomous vehicles in multiple cities in the US.
