Who you are
- You are an undergraduate student majoring in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
- You have an interest in core web technologies (HTML, CSS and JavaScript) and enjoy building cross-platform experiences
- You have used and want to become an expert in modern JavaScript frameworks, such as React, to build interactive user interfaces
- You enjoy working with design teams to craft great user experiences through code
- You are interested in learning new technologies and methods, including using AI tools for software development
- You know the importance of automated testing and are eager to learn different front-end tooling for it
- Experience with or a strong interest in learning any of the following is a plus: React Router, React Native, Cloudflare, Playwright, Modern CSS frameworks, WAI-ARIA, and Core Web Vitals

What the job involves

- This role is based on our downtown Chicago Office, located in the Merchandise Mart
- Ready to disrupt the status quo of financial services? Join Avant from June 1 to August 21 for an immersive summer experience designed to challenge your thinking and sharpen your skills
- We're looking for an intern to join our Digital Servicing web team! In this role, you’ll work directly as a member of the team to help build out a new world class financial services experience, tying together checking, credit, and loan products. Working within the technology organization at Avant, you'll be working cross-functionally with Product, Design, Data, and Compliance to help build beautiful, resilient and accessible user experiences
- Work with other engineers to write, test, and deploy application code that runs both on the server and the client
- Learn and apply testing best practices to catch bugs early and improve long-term reliability
- Participate in design discussions, peer code reviews, and team meetings across Web, iOS, and Android
- Be a part of a strong culture of ownership, pragmatism, and testing
Our take
Many Americans with below average credit scores are caught in a bind: they're unable to improve their score, and simultaneously cannot access traditional loans. Avant's alternative is to offer credit options that are powered by machine learning and based upon a large database that helps to manage risk.
For its users, the company offers a quick credit decision and speedy access to any allotted funds. It has issued over $8 billion in loans to date, and has also expanded its business through the acquisitions of ReadyForZero in 2015 and Zero Financial in 2021.
This expansion has enabled Avant to reach towards its goal of offering a whole suite of products in a single platform, such as loans, credit cards, and deposits. Although there are many FinTechs looking at ways to remove the barriers that people with low credit scores face when trying to take out loans, this expansion to banking products should help Avant to stand out.
