Role
Who you are
- Have experience building complex SaaS apps in a front-to-back JavaScript/TypeScript stack
- Have proficiency in React, Next.js, TypeScript, Serverless, AWS, Tailwind, GraphQL, Python
- Have strong knowledge of software engineering processes
- Have passion for shipping high-quality software without delay
- Have experience integrating complex 3rd party APIs
- Are comfortable making technical decisions in a fast-paced, ever-changing start-up environment
- Demonstrate knowledge of industry trends, infrastructure, and build systems
- Comfortable going into the lead in your team, and have the experience to evaluate and improve each team member
- Persistent in the face of roadblocks; dispatches them efficiently, pulling in others as necessary
- See things through from start to finish
- Able to manage yourself and the work of others well
- Understand the importance of keeping things simple and flexible
- Possess an entrepreneurial thinking style and the ability to inspire others
- Fluent in English with excellent communication skills

What the job involves
- As the Tech Lead at Tilla, you will act as a player-manager for our software engineering team (currently 4 engineers)
- You will roll up your sleeves to deliver features of Tilla while being responsible for building a robust and delivery-focused engineering organization
- You will also play a key role in making well-reasoned design decisions, guiding the team, and ensuring our product development flow is smooth from design and development to deployments and maintenance
- Hands-on Technical Leadership: Make well-reasoned tech decisions and tradeoffs in your area; contribute to and guide the development across the entire codebase
- Project Management: Take end-to-end responsibility on projects of increasing complexity and ensure timely delivery of high-quality features to QA
- Mentorship: Mentor other engineers through pairing, code reviews; contribute to/organise team knowledge sharing and team culture
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with product, design, and analytics teams to drive requirements and ensure all parties' needs are considered
- Proactive Problem Solving: Identify and address issues proactively before they escalate; seek empirical evidence through proof of concepts and tests
- Team Productivity: Scale yourself by delegating effectively, ensuring tasks are completed without micromanaging, and maintaining the team's productivity and collective impact
- Strategic Vision: Identify areas of strategic technical debt, provide cost/benefit analysis for eliminating this debt, and prioritize accordingly
- Communication: Communicate effectively across functions, set clear expectations for team members, and provide frequent feedback to support their growth
Our take
Around 90% of goods are traded over the sea, but the maritime industry has been somewhat left behind by the digital transformation that has swept through land-based logistics and most other industries. However, this situation is starting to change. One company helping to reshape the maritime sector is Flagship Founders, a venture studio focused on supporting startups seeking to disrupt the shipping industry.
Flagship Founders provides significant support in industry expertise and investment to founders with ideas that can move the industry forward, helping them achieve product/market fit and build successful, scalable products. To date it has launched four startups: Kaiko, a shipping fleet management system which has achieved 50% gains in efficient operations, Tilla, a platform for optimizing crew changes, zero44, providing carbon emission reduction software to the shipping industry, and Arinto, an arrival scheduling system for increasing efficiency and reducing pollution in ports.
Flagship Founders recently closed a seed funding round which was led by F. Laeisz, a major shipping, trade and insurance group. It will use this capital to build out its team and to continue to support its portfolio of startups. As the maritime industry moves to adopt digital improvements to its operations to drive efficiency and cut waste, Flagship Founders is in an excellent position to bring the digital revolution to a sector in need of change.
