Who you are
- Experience with API design and developing microservices

- 5+ (at L5) / 8+ (at L6) years of relevant industry experience
- Java, Ruby or Python software development experience
- Some experience developing front-end applications
- Desire or experience working with Fintech, Regtech, Blockchain, machine learning, data science, and virtual currencies
- A curious, passionate, growth-oriented mindset
- Natural curiosity and a desire to manage all aspects of building our tools in a small, and very growing team
- You must enjoy writing and shipping production software
What the job involves
- The Cash Compliance Engineering team builds high-scale analysis and visualizations systems in order to find and stop criminal activity and other bad behavior in billions of dollars of person to person, merchant, and Bitcoin transactions across the globe
- We design our products and ship code with a customer-centric focus
- Humans are at the center of everything we do, whether they are Cash customers or members of our internal operations teams
- Uncovering and preventing activities like money laundering, human trafficking, and all manner of criminal fraud before they impact our users and upend their lives is a part of Cash App's mission to bring economic empowerment to all
- Develop and support our tools as products, with a focus on elegant solutions, usability, and our customer needs
- Write and deploy code across all of Cash App's ever-evolving architecture
- Integrate machine learning models (both real time and offline) to our systems for ever evolving intelligence on possible bad behavior
- Work with Cash App feature teams and support new product launches by building tooling to expose misuse by bad actors
- Contribute to our own platform of services and data pipelines, architected for scale, and designed to anticipate the future

Our take
Block is a financial services technology company comprising of Square, Cash App, Spiral, TIDAL, and TBD. Its biggest brand, Square, offers hardware and software for small to medium-sized businesses enabling them to manage the entire payment lifecycle. It functions similarly to Shopify and Stripe, but has paired online payment processing with physical devices such as registers, payment terminals, and mobile card readers.
The business was originally founded as Square in 2009 by Jack Dorsey of Twitter fame. Already well-established with SMEs all over the globe, Square has significantly benefited from the increased demand for mobile payment systems. Its order management feature remains a go-to tool for small businesses that otherwise didn't have the proper infrastructure in place when demand for home delivery surged.
Square rebranded as Block in December 2021, with the Square brand name remaining in place for their seller business. The company has since come under fire for its security practices, facing lawsuits in relation to a major breach of CashApp user data, and in 2024 announced plans to reduce its workforce in order to cut costs. Despite these setbacks, there is every chance the business will move past this, though it may take some time to rebuild trust in its product.
