Role
Who you are
- The Social Media Associate will have a strong familiarity with our content, a passion for media and football in particular and a deep understanding of social media platforms, trends and tactics
- 1 to 3 years experience in social media, sport media or publishing
- Strong writing skills with a keen eye for detail, grammar & punctuation
- Excellent communication skills
- Demonstrable interest and knowledge of Premier League, European, international and women’s football, as well as a working knowledge of major US sports
- Flexibility to work different shifts (early, late, weekends) around the football calendar
- Knowledge of social media best practices & resources
- Creativity to engage a passionate audience of sports fans
- A positive attitude and a willingness to learn and develop
- Demonstrated platform fluency on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Threads, BlueSky and WhatsApp in business/professional applications
- Experience managing multiple, large social channels
- Design and video editing experience preferred
What the job involves
- The Athletic is looking for a creative content creator to join our team as Social Media Associate
- In this role, you will be responsible for creating social-specific content designed to engage sports fans across the globe to drive growth, engagement and awareness
- Produce creative daily content for Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Threads, BlueSky and WhatsApp focused on engagement
- Assist in developing and implementing reactive social strategy based on breaking news, major moments and live games
- Develop copy and visual assets to amplify top editorial content (stories, podcasts)
- Assist in driving audience growth through social campaigns
- Cover matches live across social channels, collaborating with US social team
- Work with the social team to build a sense of community around The Athletic, teams, podcasts and partners to increase engagement and drive growth from word of mouth
- Development of creative assets (design, video) for social platforms
- Assist in gathering insights and learnings through ongoing social testing and tracking, analyzing what’s working and what’s not to enable us to continually develop and improve

The Athletic provides authentic, in-depth coverage written by journalists who know the teams they write about inside out. Its model bucks the trend of traditional sports journalism outfits by asking for a subscription rather than relying on ad-revenue.
Despite initial doubts that users would be willing to pay for sports journalistic content, the Athletic has found significant success and was acquired by the New York times in 2022.
This collaboration was criticised at the time by investors who believed that the Athletic was undersold. However, despite The Athletic operating at a loss since the takeover, it's clear that the New York Times perceives the subscription magazine as a long-term investment, predicting that it will be operating at a profit within the next 4 years. This will be aided by accelerated customer growth and the growing trend of subscription-based sports news.
