Who you are
- A seasoned IT professional, with hands-on experience in system administration on multiple platforms, and a successful management experience
- A creative mindset trying to tackle challenges rapidly and with limited resources, by thinking differently
- Good communication, team management, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to negotiate with stakeholders
- Hands on system administration experience on linux and preferably another OS
- Capacity to define a pragmatic and ambitious strategic plan and track its execution
What the job involves
- The IT team is what makes Proton possible: it supports everything from all the internal computer systems from laptops to the internal documentation solution and videoconferencing
- The team collaborates with the security team to provide a safe environment for Proton staff to communicate and develop the products and business
- Manage a distributed team of 3-5 IT engineers
- Improve processes that span beyond IT to eliminate delays and manual labor, in collaboration with other parties involved in those processes
- Make sure all new joiners have the hardware and software they need to hit the ground running
- Define, track and improve user satisfaction and efficiency metrics
- Create the team strategy and vision, and break it down into quarterly objectives. Drive the execution
- Current Projects:
- Revamp our project management and internal documentation solutions
- Automate all the onboarding and offboarding workflows, connecting all our systems to centralized authentication
- Tech Stack and Tools:
- We use Proton's products internally: mail, drive, docs, calendar..
- Linux servers, FreeIPA
- Zendesk, Jira, Confluence, Slack, and other popular products
- The IT team is the junction of multiple business functions: engineering, finance, customer support, and more
- An exceptional leader in this role will develop connections with the rest of the business, propose changes to streamline processes, evaluate their business impact and ROI, and implement
Our take
Proton is a Geneva-based startup founded by former CERN worker and internet privacy advocate Andy Yen. It provides internet users with encrypted webmail, calendar, drive, and VPN services.
Proton maintains its pro-privacy ethos using a Swiss VPN, protected by strict Swiss privacy laws. In essence, it has established a connection between the personal and the political, smartly utilising the country’s national laws to benefit people and organisations globally. Proton also funds charities and movements such as the World Wide Web Foundation and Netblocks, further cementing it as an influential NGO.
Perhaps Proton’s most important quality is its determination to maintain independence from advertisers and companies. Originally founded on donations, Proton has funded itself via grants rather than venture capital so that all of its customer's data is never at risk of being mined. One effect of this is that to keep up with the increasing competition in the data privacy sector, Proton has expanded its services to allow more cross-selling and simultaneously has more products to offer, such as drive and calendar privacy.
