Who you are

Have 3 + years building production software, ideally SaaS
Feel comfortable in Ruby/Rails (or a comparable MVC framework and ready to ramp up quickly)
Enjoy giving and receiving constructive feedback. Mentoring interests you but you’re still honing the craft yourself
Can weigh trade-offs between speed, scope and tech debt without losing sight of customer value
Bonus points for hands-on exposure to AWS, Docker or other cloud-native tooling. Extra bonus points if you’ve had some exposure to React
Hold a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science (or equivalent practical experience)

What the job involves

Build the backbone of the world’s best onboarding platform and help the team level up as you go!
We’re looking for a Backend Engineer to join our team and provide innovative solutions for our platform
In this role, you’ll help design and build the services that power Appical’s onboarding platform, influencing how hundreds of customer organisations welcome new hires using our platform
You’ll work hands-on in our Ruby on Rails codebase, champion clean code and pragmatic testing, and contribute to our journey toward a more modular service architecture
In this role, you'll be joining the Product & Development team. A team led by Gijs Hendrix
Ship and refine backend features in Ruby on Rails
Design APIs and data models that remain fast, reliable, and secure as customer volumes grow
Collaborate with product, design and QA to break down work, estimate effort, and deliver value in small, measurable increments
Monitor performance, observability, and cost, surfacing improvements backed by data
Support teammates through thoughtful code reviews and the occasional pair-programming session. You’ll learn from seniors and pass on what you’ve mastered so far
Uphold engineering best practices: CI/CD, automated tests, documentation and blameless incident post-mortems
