Backend Engineer, Treefera

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
• 3+ years of experience building production-grade Python services with a focus on public APIs, data processing, performance, and scalability
• Strong experience with Python web frameworks and API tooling, such as FastAPI or Flask, along with schema validation via Pydantic
• Solid understanding of data modeling and a clean, maintainable DAL (e.g., SQLAlchemy or equivalent), including migrations and versioned schemas
• Proficiency with Python data libraries such as NumPy and pandas
• Strong understanding of engineering principles and practices: separation of concerns, encapsulation, code reviews, CI, observability, and layered testing strategies
• Autonomous but collaborative: you will own meaningful components and make an impact, while working closely within a cross-functional team to fulfil Treefera’s mission

• As a Backend Engineer, you will be instrumental in designing, building, and scaling backend systems that power our scientific and geospatial products
• Your focus will be on public APIs in Python, a robust data access layer (DAL), and well-structured data models
• You will collaborate closely with our science and product teams to turn requirements into reliable production services, leveraging tools like FastAPI, Pydantic, SQLAlchemy, and Python-based data libraries to process large, complex datasets and geospatial information
• This role is primarily backend engineering
• Occasionally, you may integrate existing ML models into services or pipelines, but ML is a small, integration-oriented part of the work rather than the core focus
• Success in this role will be defined by building robust, well-tested APIs, maintaining clean data contracts and models, and delivering scalable, efficient geospatial and data processing pipelines
• Work in a cross-functional, feature-oriented team to deliver end-to-end value. You focus on the backend and data layer while collaborating closely with others
• Build and maintain public APIs and internal services, including versioning, and documentation
• Design, implement, and evolve our DAL and data models to ensure clean contracts between services and data stores
• Develop and operate geospatial data pipelines and services, ensuring performance, correctness, and cost efficiency at scale
• Work in Agile sprints to deliver backlog items; at daily standup, align on priorities and unblock the team
• Navigate ambiguity with good judgment: clarify requirements, challenge assumptions, and weigh trade-offs; people over process
• Contribute beyond code: documentation, tests, deployments, release notes, and demos. Balance pragmatism with quality
• Participate in a transversal initiative focused on scaling our pipeline capacity and improving non-functional characteristics
