Role
Who you are
- Proven experience designing and building automated tests using the Cypress testing framework, with strong command of JavaScript/TypeScript
- Experience working closely with engineering, design and product in cross functional teams
- Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines and a good grasp of what quality at pace looks like
- Strong communication skills - comfortable working cross-functionally, documenting decisions clearly, and influencing without authority
- A self-starter mindset: you take ownership of problems, drive them to resolution, and don't wait to be told what to test next
What the job involves
- We're looking for a Quality Automation Engineer to join our team to own end-to-end test automation across Yoto's platform, helping us ship reliable, high-quality experiences to families around the world
- Our Software Engineering team builds and maintains the platform that powers every Yoto experience - from the apps families use daily to the serverless backend that delivers audio content reliably at scale
- We work across AWS serverless infrastructure, API Gateway, DynamoDB, OpenSearch, CloudFront, and EventBridge, with a culture that values strong documentation, open ownership, and automated tooling
- Quality isn't a gate at the end of our process - it's baked in from the start, and this role sits at the heart of that
- Own the design, implementation and maintenance of automated tests on the Yoto website
- Drive test strategy and coverage decisions end-to-end
- Collaborate closely with software engineers to embed quality practices earlier in the development lifecycle, including code reviews and testability guidance
- Working with mobile developers to help manually QA critical pieces of work, and assisting with crafting requirements
- Identify gaps in test coverage and proactively build solutions that reduce manual effort and increase release confidence
- Champion a culture of quality across the team - sharing knowledge, mentoring colleagues, and advocating for best practices
- Continuously improve tooling, pipelines, and test infrastructure to support a fast-moving engineering team

Our take
A key development in the last 5 years has been a move towards screen-based kids entertainment like apps and streaming services. However, more recently there have been concerns that excessive screen time for children can be damaging to health and development. So, many consumers are looking for alternative products which will expose children to modernity without the drawbacks of many modern devices. This is the demand which Yoto is setting out to capitalise on.
Yoto's product - a screen-free audio platform - enables children to access features such as audiobooks, podcasts, and soundscapes via physical cards inserted into the device. The Yoto Player has received considerable early praise from consumers and from investors also, who granted Yoto considerable funding.
Perhaps the most difficult challenge for a business operating in the highly competitive children's toys market is keeping its product current. However, Yoto's software is fully customisable, meaning that alongside its library of content, parents can add their own audio files to the device to suit the interests of their children. This imbibes Yoto with a customisability that gives it an edge, especially as children's tastes change with age.
