Role
Who you are
- This is a high-impact role perfect for a team player with a passion for law, and of course, dogs!
- You have 8+ years (post-law school) of relevant marketing legal experience, with law firm experience required. Big Law and in-house experience preferred
- You have a J.D. from an ABA accredited law school and admission to the NY bar
- You have a strong working knowledge of marketing laws and regulations
- You have strong thought leadership and business partnering skills at all organizational levels, with an ability to manage tight timelines and shifting priorities
- You have excellent communication (written and verbal) skills, the highest attention to detail and ability to communicate clearly and productively with non-legal colleagues
- You possess a willingness to be flexible and proactive in solving complex challenges, with a proven track record of understanding business needs, finding creative solutions and balancing the interplay between legal and business risk
- You thrive in a fast-paced environment, are a self-starter, able to prioritize effectively and work both independently and as part of a growing team

What the job involves
- We are looking for a highly motivated marketing attorney to join our fast-growing legal team as Senior Counsel, Marketing, who will manage a broad range of advertising and marketing issues across the organization and play an integral role as one of the core members of our Legal Department at The Farmer’s Dog
- They will report to the Lead Counsel, Marketing, and will work closely with stakeholders across the Company to address the Company’s day-to-day marketing issues and compliance needs
- The Senior Counsel is expected to further accelerate TFD’s momentum through working with the business to efficiently and proactively identify ways to mitigate risk and eliminate legal blockers
- You'll be reporting to and working alongside the Lead Marketing Counsel,
- You will serve our Brand, Acquisition, and Retention departments (and other related business partners), providing proactive, efficient and practical advice and counsel on a wide array of advertising and marketing issues, including by vetting media and communications materials and analyzing advertising substantiation issues
- Deepen accessibility for our marketing teams through direct management and processing of claims review requests and proactive support of business needs on issues common to our business (offers, influencers, testimonials, giveaways)
- Draft and negotiate marketing-focused agreements, some including media, sponsorship, promotion, music, influencer, partnership, talent and agency agreements and more
- Collaborate with the Lead Marketing Counsel on the development and creation of training materials, guidelines and other legal marketing resources for our marketing teams
- Manage the Company’s trademark portfolio and assist with other intellectual property matters
- Stay apprised of all federal and state advertising law and related legal developments applicable to our business and keep leadership and business units apprised of important matters

Pet food production in the US is held to alarmingly low safety and quality standards despite being a $99 billion industry, which is hidden behind loose labeling and marketing regulations. When one of the founders of The Farmer's Dog realised that dog food was making his dog sick, they decided that dogs shouldn't be fed anything that wouldn't pass legal requirements for humans.
The Farmer’s Dog produces customised dog food packages that are sent as a regular subscription service. Recipes behind the dog food are personalised and are comprised of natural and high-quality ingredients, aiming to meet the dietary requirements of each individual dog. As the dog food is human-grade, the company even taste-tests its recipes on humans.
The startup sends millions of meals every month and boasts a continual subscription rate of almost 50%. It has raised $60 million in funding to date and is developing new pet food products and scaling to offer its subscription service outside of the US.
