Who you are
- The ideal candidate brings strong cross-border HR experience, balancing hands-on execution with strategic planning in a rapidly scaling environment
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field (Master’s or HR certification preferred – SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, CHRP, or equivalent)
- 5–8 years of progressive HR experience, including direct support for both U.S. and Canadian employees
- Strong knowledge of U.S. federal/state labor laws and Canadian federal/provincial employment standards
- Analytical mindset with a close attention to detail
- Demonstrated ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on HR execution
- Excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal skills
What the job involves
- We are seeking a highly skilled and strategic HR Manager to oversee human resources operations across the United States and Canada. This role will report to the VP of People and support our growing workforce in both regions, ensuring compliance with employment legislation, driving HR initiatives, and fostering a positive workplace culture
- Act as the primary HR contact for employees and managers across the U.S. and Canada
- Partner with leadership to build and sustain a positive, inclusive workplace culture
- Provide coaching and guidance on performance management, conflict resolution, and employee engagement
- Must be familiar with workplace investigations
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, provincial, and local employment laws in both countries
- Maintain and update employee handbooks, policies, and practices to reflect regional regulations
- Partner with legal or external counsel to mitigate employment-related risks
- Support full-cycle recruitment in partnership with hiring managers
- Lead onboarding and off-boarding processes to deliver a seamless employee experience
- Develop and administer performance management processes aligned with organizational goals
- Coordinate compensation reviews and benchmarking across U.S. and Canadian markets
- Oversee benefits administration, ensuring competitiveness and compliance with local requirements
- Provide employee education on compensation and benefits programs
- Manage HRIS data integrity, reporting, and analytics to support workforce planning
- Partner with payroll teams to ensure accurate and timely processing in both countries
- Lead HR projects and initiatives, including DEI, wellness, and employee engagement programs
Our take
As the world moves to become more sustainable, issues such as global food waste are increasingly apparent. Food waste is not only a travesty because of world hunger but also because of the devastating greenhouse gas emissions caused as a result.
Flashfood considered how they could tackle this issue. The mobile marketplace provides customers with access to discounted food nearing its best-by date and salvaging food that can be used to help feed those in need or those who are unable to afford fresh and healthy food. The app allows users to browse through available deals at participating stores near them. Customers can then purchase items directly in the app and pick up orders from the Flashfood zone in their participating store.
The company has numerous partners across Canada and the United States, and has saved shoppers millions on their grocery bills, as well as removing gargantuan amounts of product from the waste cycle. Indeed, its collaboration with food solutions company SpartanNash alone has saved families $1.9M, and diverted one million pounds of food waste. Flashfood continues to develop its strategic partnerships and further its expansion, on the back on earning the number one spot in the Social Good Category on the 2023 Fast Company's list of the most innovative companies.
