Company mission

Anne Boden founded Starling with a clear goal: to build a bank that would help you manage your money, all from one app. Their vision is to give everyone clarity and control over their money so they have the opportunity to enjoy a healthy financial life.

Role

Who you are

  • Be comfortable coding in at least one major language (e.g., Java, Go, Python, JavaScript)
  • Be comfortable working in the Cloud. We operate primarily in AWS and GCP
  • Have a passion to reduce toil via automation
  • Relish taking ownership of features from idea through to production
  • Have expertise in and enthusiasm for observability / monitoring / telemetry in modern cloud-based environments. Our stack includes Prometheus, Grafana, Sentry, and others
  • Understand and evangelise the value of measuring with indicators and objectives (SLIs / SLOs)
  • Be conversant with concepts from domains such as Linux, networking, containerisation, distributed systems, immutable infrastructure
  • We have built our entire banking platform in house and mostly in Java. We are looking for people who want to work on building the tooling that is used by our engineers on a daily basis

What the job involves

  • We’re looking for a Reliability engineer to join our Platform team
  • While reliability is a concern of every service-owning team, our dedicated reliability team has a mission of building necessary systems and tools that improve our availability, scalability, observability and incident response
  • The team also advocates for reliability across engineering, collaborating with and empowering other teams to elevate their standards and practices
  • Build and run the systems we need to ensure resilience across the whole platform, using cutting-edge techniques of observability and reliability engineering
  • Continually enhance our incident response capability through tooling and practice improvements. The team does not act as the first line of incident response
  • Collaborate with other teams in order to establish key practices in their own development lifecycle
  • Participate in chaos experimentation to improve resilience

Application process

  • Interviewing is a two way process and we want you to have the time and opportunity to get to know us, as much as we are getting to know you!
  • Our interviews are conversational and we want to get the best from you, so come with questions and be curious
  • Initial phone call - ~45 minutes
  • Take home technical test to be discussed in the technical interview - ~3 hours
  • Technical interview - ~1.5 hours
  • Final Interview - ~40 minutes

Our take

Starling started life focused on consumer banking, they have since found most of their success by competing in the business banking space. They’ve caught up with Tide and beaten the likes of Monzo and Revolut to a more complete offering for businesses.

This progress resulted in them receiving a £100m grant in April 2019 from a body created to boost competition in SME banking, which they're using to accelerate building a full suite of digital banking products: intelligent forecasting tools, and digitally-enabled relationship management functions as well as lending products.

As well as continuing to expand in the UK, they’re expanding in Europe. They’re imminently launching an international bank in Dublin, which will allow Starling to offer its current account across the European Union after Brexit.

Banking for small businesses has historically been ignored even though the experience is poor. Starling is in tune with knowing what their customers want, and they continue to build out their range of third-party products within its banking app thanks to support from its open API. They currently have 11 integrations, including Xero, but that figure continues to grow.
