Role
Who you are
- Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field (e.g. engineering, sciences, math, statistics, computer science, or related discipline); advanced degree preferred
- 5+ years of experience in data science or machine learning roles
- Strong proficiency in Python and SQL
- Demonstrated experience building, validating, and iterating on machine learning models in production environments
- Experience designing experiments and applying statistical methods to evaluate model and product performance
- Ability to independently drive ambiguous, high-impact initiatives
- Strong communication skills and the ability to translate complex modeling concepts into clear business recommendations
What the job involves
- We are looking for a Data Scientist to join our growing team as we enter a new phase of expansion
- The data science and analytics (DS&A) team’s mission is to make Lime sustainable and more valuable, by identifying and steering the business towards opportunities, guiding the organization to make the best possible decisions, and enabling effective implementation and operations
- In this role, you will work with Product, Engineering, and cross-functional business teams to address challenges and opportunities across City & Vehicle Tech, including hardware pilots and responsible riding initiatives
- You’ll set up end-to-end analytical and modeling capabilities (instrumentation, experimentation, model development, validation, and deployment support) that will feed our data-driven decision-making and power product experiences
- Key strengths of this role include curiosity, ownership, and technical depth to operate independently and cross functionally in a fast-paced environment
- Lead the development, validation, productionization, and iteration of machine learning models that support city and vehicle tech initiatives, including feature engineering, model selection, performance tuning, and integration into product and enforcement systems
- Define and establish model and product performance metrics, building clear evaluation frameworks to assess live performance and guide data-driven decision-making
- Own and contribute to the development of analytical data pipelines and instrumentation required to support modeling, experimentation, and reliable reporting
- Design, lead, and support experimentation efforts, including product initiatives and pilot programs, to measure impact, validate performance, and deliver insights that inform broader product and business strategy
- Manage complex, cross-functional initiatives from scoping through executive communication
- Make business recommendations using effective presentation skills, conveying findings at multiple levels including executive leadership, managers, and peers
Our take
In recent years, electric-powered mobility companies have attracted an extraordinary amount of interest and funding, in part due to rising eco-friendly sentiment, and in part because of the race to "find the next Uber". Lime is one such company, that has rapidly scaled across multiple geographies to be a key player in the fight for market leadership.
Lime, along with its competitors, has had to grapple with regulation in many of its target markets, but nonetheless has steadily increased its footprint. Since its launch, the company has facilitated millions of trips, making it one of the biggest companies of its kind. Interestingly, the CEO has stated that "cars are our true business rivals—not other scooter companies", suggesting that its biggest business challenge will be to get families to give up their second cars.
With a presence that spans an impressive number of regions - in 2023, Lime began operating in Qatar - the company has cemented itself in the micromobility market and stands to profit from the increasing popularity of these types of services. A substantial increase in ridership enabled Lime to achieve "free cash flow positivity" two years in a row, with suggestions it will pursue a US IPO in 2027.
