Role
Who you are
- We’re looking for someone with deep technical know-how, a sharp eye for lifecycle strategy, and a builder’s mindset
- 6+ years of experience in lifecycle, CRM, or retention marketing, with a strong track record in email automation and systems design
- Proven ability to stand up marketing automation systems from scratch
- Skilled at working with data integrations, ETL pipelines, and customer segmentation (especially using internal data warehouses like Redshift)
- A strong grasp of what drives user retention and engagement and the ability to build campaigns that support both
- Comfortable working in HubSpot, with a clear POV on where it shines and where it falls short for B2B comms
- Excellent communication and documentation skills; you know how to transfer knowledge, not just build things
- Strategic and solutions-oriented; someone who thrives on tackling complex systems and making them work smarter
- Preferred: Experience working in education or with school/district audiences, especially navigating firewall and deliverability challenges
What the job involves
- CommonLit is looking for an Email Marketing Automation Specialist (Contractor) to drive our retention marketing efforts by scaling personalized outreach through smarter, more powerful email marketing
- In this role, you’ll design and implement a fully automated lifecycle system that helps us reach more customer educators with timely, relevant communication, which enables our team to deepen impact while scaling their support
- You’ll audit our current setup, build new workflows using Redshift data and advanced segmentation, and train internal team members to manage the system long-term.
- Your work will be key to scaling our retention efforts and will directly shape how thousands of partners experience CommonLit
- The Email Marketing Automation Specialist (Contractor) will be reporting directly to the Director of Marketing
- The contract length is 4 months; up to 20 hours per week, with potential for light advisory support after handoff. Our target onboarding date is late June to early July
- Audit current email workflows and infrastructure in HubSpot to identify opportunities and pain points
- Design and implement a scalable, segmented automation system across the customer lifecycle, from onboarding to winback
- Leverage Redshift data and internal integrations to power dynamic content and advanced segmentation
- Recommend and configure the most appropriate tools and processes for long-term automation (within platform constraints)
- Build lifecycle workflows such as onboarding nudges, task reminders, renewal prompts, upsell triggers, and re-engagement sequences
- Define logic and goals for each automation track in collaboration with Account Management, Data Science, and Marketing
- Collaborate with stakeholders to outline message objectives and structure and draft email copy
- Build systems that give Account Managers visibility into the outreach their assigned customers have received (or missed), ensuring they can personalize follow-up and avoid overlap
- Establish key lifecycle and retention metrics; set up dashboards to track campaign performance end-to-end
- Ensure campaigns are measurable with clearly defined conversion actions (e.g., onboarding completion, renewal, engagement) and downstream impact (e.g. product usage)
- Develop clear documentation and standard operating procedures to ensure continuity after handoff
- Train internal team members on how to monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize automated workflows and apply best practices moving forward

This figure is remarkable, and with educators still struggling to fill gaps in education, many fear it will rise. So CommonLit’s tailored literacy lessons may prove more critical than ever.
CommonLit is a non-profit edtech platform that provides research based reading lessons and resources for all literacy levels, grades 3-12. The curriculum is in use by over 20 million registered teachers and students worldwide, and 88,000 schools in the US alone - the majority of them low-income. It’s localizing many of its materials into Spanish too, to tap into the substantial Latin-American markets.
This kind of global reach and deep market penetration is a real coup for the business, especially given the highly competitive nature of the US edtech scene. Lalilo, OgStar Reading, and Simbi are among the many for-profit edtech startups looking to address the same issue, but they will struggle to compete with CommonLit's comprehensive free offering. Plus, CommonLit's non-profit status could mean it’s less vulnerable to the looming threat of the edTech bubble bursting. New products such as a Chat GPT detector for teachers exemplifies how CommonLit is keeping its finger on the pulse so as to maintain relevancy.
