Who you are

What the job involves
- We are looking for software engineering co-ops to join us September - December 2026
- We're looking for intellectually curious and driven engineering students to help lay the groundwork for our growing machine learning automation systems
- Our MLOps team builds and scales the machine learning infrastructure that powers PathAI's enterprise AI systems in research and production production — spanning cloud infrastructure (AWS and on-prem), Kubernetes, distributed systems, and observability
- We care as much about reliability and reproducibility as we do about speed: everything we ship should be dependable, well-tested, and easy for other engineers to build on
- As a co-op, you'll get a broad, hands-on introduction to ML automation
- Solve interesting problems with code
- Build new features for internal users, and refactor existing ones to make them better
- Interface directly with team members of all levels
- Work with a wide range of systems, processes, and technologies to solve problems in sustainable ways. Sometimes you'll be neck- deep in low-level systems, and other times you'll be pairing up with to build developer features
- Collaborate with machine learning and infrastructure teams
- Drive and uphold high engineering standards, bringing consistency to the codebases you encounter and ensuring software is adequately reviewed, tested, and integrated
- Learn and share knowledge with others along the way
Our take
PathAI is a leader in the field of AI-powered pathology, dedicated to transforming patient outcomes by harnessing the power of AI. Its core mission revolves around enhancing the accuracy of diagnoses and the effectiveness of disease treatments, particularly in critical areas like cancer.
PathAI's pioneering spirit is evident through its breakthroughs, exemplified by innovations such as the AIM-HER2 Breast Cancer algorithm. This tool automates HER2 scoring and introduces a novel approach with additive multiple instance learning (aMIL) heatmaps, offering insights into scoring mechanisms. Additionally, PathAI's PathExplore panel of human interpretable features (HIFs) fosters collaborative research, thus enhancing understanding of the tumor microenvironment.
The next chapter for PathAI will unfold under Roche's leadership, following the company's acquisition in early 2026. Building on a partnership that began in 2021, the merger combines PathAI's AI-powered pathology platform, including it AISight software and companion diagnostic capabilities, with Roche's global diagnostic infrastructure. By scaling these technologies worldwide and strengthening capabilities in precision medicines, biomarker discovers, and clinical research, the acquisition is expected to accelerate the adoption of AI-driven pathology and further PathAI's mission of improving patient outcomes through faster, more accurate diagnostics.
