Who you are
- Successful applicants will be able to write code samples in various languages for our SDK docs and technical guides, and contribute meaningfully to the review and oversight of all forms of technical content
- You may have been a software developer or other kind of engineer, or you may have a CS or other technical degree
- But you’re not just a technical hire–if you’re a good fit for this role, you’ll care deeply about the power of the written word and what makes a great reader experience
- You’ll be a motivated self-starter who is able to collaborate cross-functionally, give and receive feedback gracefully, and support other team members as they learn and grow
- You must have very strong writing and editing skills
- You must have 7+ years of technical writing experience and/or a degree in a tech field or related industry. Don’t panic about this part–your experience is more important than any specific job title you’ve had
- You must have a strong technical background, possibly as a software developer. This role will require you to write and review code as well as documentation
- You’re excellent at distilling technical and UX requirements into documentation plans and deliverables. You do not need an outline handed to you–you can take your notes from a team meeting and act on them on your own
- You’re equally strong working on your own or in a friendly, collaborative, close-knit team
- You must be conversational in Markdown and/or HTML, Git, GitHub, common CI/CD tools, and workflows based in version control tools
- You must have some familiarity with AI-based code and content management tools, like Copilot, Cursor, or Claude
- You must have some familiarity with Postman and OpenAPI specifications
- Proficiency in any modern programming language is a plus
What the job involves
- LaunchDarkly is looking for someone to join our small-but-mighty docs team
- This is a high-impact role for a senior individual contributor
- The docs team sits in the Developer Experience section of the Technology org
- This position reports up to the technical writing manager
- This role is on the “technical” end of “technical writer”
- In this role, you'll contribute to LaunchDarkly’s product, SDK, and API documentation, as well as other technical content
- You'll help us tackle some of the documentation problems of a mid-stage startup, like creating processes to help the docs team work effectively with a high-velocity product org, exploring ways to improve our existing content with LLMs and AI, and shipping some of the best docs around
- Leverage your diverse skill set to write, edit, maintain, and enhance comprehensive documentation for LaunchDarkly products, APIs, and SDKs. This includes creating procedure-based documentation, crafting use-case-driven narrative guides, and addressing complex technical topics informed by engineering contributions
- Collaborate closely with product managers, developers, designers, and cross-functional teams to develop clear, concise documentation for new features and integrations
- Drive improvements by scoping, planning, and executing site upgrades in collaboration with the documentation team
- Partner with support, developer advocates, and product and engineering stakeholders to proactively address customer pain points, driving continuous documentation improvements
- Respond to user feedback swiftly and effectively, ensuring documentation aligns with organizational goals and consistently meets user needs while evolving with product advancements
Our take
Feature flags are a powerful software development tool, allowing teams to modify system behavior without changing code, therefore minimizing risk. If a business has a new feature they want to test, they can then roll it out to a small set of users before letting it go live. These companies can, for example, get quick feedback on the new feature and fix any bugs, or roll back any changes.
LaunchDarkly allows companies to run tests like this by activating the new code for only a small set of users prior to launch. Typically running these tests requires lots of developer time - a daunting and expensive prospect for most rapidly growing businesses - and can risk disruption to the user experience if testing takes place on the live product.
The platform is used by more than 1,500 customers, including the likes of IBM, Intuit and Atlassian. Signalling a change in strategy, the company shook up its management in 2023 and is now aiming to scale its already strong growth under the leadership of Dan Rogers, a product and marketing specialist with an impressive track record at Rubrik, AWS and Microsoft. It is now well poised to develop into a leading business in the feature management space.
