Role
Who you are
- We look for Engineers who are motivated to learn new things, ship new features, and pursue new and interesting challenges
- Our stack is mainly focused around Ruby, however, if you’re passionate about learning new things then prior experience with Ruby is not essential
- At least 5+ years of experience in software development, in specific with OOP (object-oriented programming)
- You have experience in designing, implementing and deploying backend services with a focus on high availability, low latency, and consistency
- You have proven experience of collaborating closely with other engineers to become a valued member of an autonomous, cross-functional team
- You have mentored junior engineers and you enjoy cooperating with engineers throughout the company
- You understand the value that you can add to the business, the product and the impact of your work on customers
- You feel comfortable documenting RFCs and describing problems, opportunities, pros and cons of solution alternatives
- You have prior experience in Fintech domain or have a keen interest in the field
- You are proficient in web technologies - JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, CSS
- You are familiar with popular libraries like ReactJS, NextJS, Redux, CSS Modules, Tailwind, and/or Rails
- You understand the browser environment and how it interprets code - HTTP/S, Critical Render Path, CORS, Caching, CDNs
- You are a passionate experienced engineer with a strong eye for detail
- You strive to be a great team player and don’t shy away from new challenges
- You are comfortable in a startup environment and are ready to jump in and help if needed

What the job involves
- Here at Catawiki, you will make an impact by improving and delivering product innovations for the Catawiki platform
- Along with other members of the Development team, you will build scalable microservices while measuring and monitoring system performance
- In addition, you will use experimentation, backed by data analysis, to add product features and deliver the best user experience on the platform
- As part of our Fintech team, you will partner with other Engineers and a Product Manager to think of new ways to improve the payments, pricing and financial administration experience of our users and stakeholders
- You ensure that your web components work well and are responsive to desktop, tablet, and mobile screens
- By measuring and monitoring system performance, you optimise the performance of your products

In the past, it was only possible to purchase special items such as rare coins, antiques, and vintage cars at auctions held at physical locations. These days, many people prefer online auctions, but whilst they provide a wider range of objects for sale, this comes at the cost of proper pricing and quality control. Catawiki provides an expert-regulated online auctioning marketplace where users can browse and bid for special objects easily via the web or mobile app.
The objects listed on Catawiki are curated, valued, and verified by in-house experts, with over 100,000 objects passing through the marketplace every week. In this approach, the company has combined the community knowledge found at traditional auctions with the benefits of digital auctioning platforms, occupying a space that has long remained empty, and avoiding competition from bidding marketplace giants such as eBay.
Catawiki has received good funding in the past, which contributed to it becoming the success it is today. A recent venture has seen the company expand to serve artisanal artists with its handmade products auction series.
