Role
Who you are
- We are seeking a Data Engineer with 5-10 years’ experience from multiple studios in mobile app or game data
- Solid understanding of database concepts, SQL, and experience with BigQuery or similar cloud based databases
- Proficiency in Python for data engineering tasks, including data manipulation, ELT processes, and pipeline development
- Experience with data pipeline frameworks like Dagster or Apache Airflow is a plus
- Ability to take ownership of the project, work independently and collaborate closely with multiple teams
What the job involves
- The mission is to provide streamlined and efficient access to the data needed to uncover player behaviour patterns, game performance metrics, and much more
- Collaborate with a team of data analysts and various teams across the studio to improve the accessibility and usability of our data
- Implement data quality checks and monitoring mechanisms to ensure the reliability of our data
- Explore and evaluate technologies and tools to improve the whole data infrastructure
- Audit our current stack & pipeline from a value creation perspective and efficiency
- Provide recommendations on highest priority improvements with expected outcome as well as effort associated with it
- Design, implement, and deploy improvements
- Train/coach/support our team
- Desired outcomes after six months:
- Our most important data pipelines are reliable, efficient, and the Data Analytics team can maintain them independently
- Our most expensive data processes are optimized and well understood
- We have a plan for the next 6 months
Our take
Mobile video games have existed since smartphones first hit the market, often being associated with single-player novelty games aimed to pass the time. Whilst many mobile developers have attempted to make games that emulate the social communities that console and PC multi-player games host, these generally do not succeed due to lacking sufficient social infrastructure.
A Thinking Ape develops video games for mobile devices, focusing on integrating social features that facilitate communities which are commonplace on other video game platforms. The company's games include Kingdoms of Heckfire, Party in my Dorm, and Casino X, each of which is free-to-play with in-game purchases and revolve around independent in-game social features.
Whilst A Thinking Ape is not the first developer to produce such games for mobile, many of its competitors have stuck to lazy ports from PC and console. The company instead makes the mobile platform its priority, allowing it to fill a nice gap in the market. Though not immune from the industry woes that saw layoffs across gaming in recent years, the company has appeared positive throughout restructuring and there's no reason it won't have a bright future.
