Who you are
- This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys embedded systems, hardware bring-up, and deep debugging — and who wants ownership of firmware that directly affects aircraft safety and performance
- 6+ years experience developing production firmware for embedded systems
- Deep proficiency in Embedded C and/or C++
- Experience with microcontrollers, SoCs, and peripheral interfaces (e.g. SPI, I²C, UART, CAN)
- Hands-on experience with board bring-up and hardware-adjacent debugging
- Strong understanding of memory management, interrupts, concurrency, and real-time constraints
- Experience shipping firmware to real devices in operational environments
- Experience in safety-critical domains such as robotics, aviation, automotive, or industrial systems
- Familiarity with FreeRTOS, ESP-IDF and/or STM environments
- Experience with power electronics, battery management systems, or charging hardware
- Exposure to ArduPilot/PX4, ROS/ROS2, or similar robotics platforms
- Python experience for tooling, testing, or automation
- Familiarity with Linux-based embedded systems
- Must be available to work in Ireland (Dublin) this is a hybrid role
What the job involves
- As a Software Engineer on the Aircraft team with a firmware focus, you will own delivery of firmware and low-level software running on aircraft hardware
- You’ll work close to electronics, sensors, and power systems, taking responsibility for reliability from silicon to system-level behavior
- Develop low-level code in Embedded C/C++, including drivers, hardware interfaces, and control logic
- Participate in board bring-up, peripheral integration, and hardware validation
- Own firmware lifecycle: development, testing, deployment, and in-field support
- Lead end-to-end delivery of firmware features, from design through rollout and monitoring
- Improve robustness through watchdogs, telemetry, logging, and diagnostics
- Debug complex issues across firmware, hardware, and higher-level aircraft software
- Build and improve firmware testing strategies, including unit tests, integration tests, and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) validation
- Influence architectural decisions related to hardware-software boundaries
- Help raise standards for firmware quality, safety, and maintainability
Our take
Manna Drone Delivery is a drone company that began operating hyper-locally in Ireland, making small deliveries in partnership with JustEat, Tescos, and a number of coffee and book shops. The service has proven popular to the tune of thousands of deliveries, and Manna is now expanding towards full rollout.
Efficient, low-emission, and high agility drones are expected to be the future of last-mile deliveries. Whilst there are some questions as to whether they’re a smart addition to built up areas, the consensus is that they will at least provide a welcome complement to other delivery vehicles. As such, getting in early with the correct technology could open up substantial doors for Manna.
The company is eyeing up US expansion, which may seem ambitious for the relatively small outfit. Bear in mind, however, that Alphabet’s suburban drone delivery subsidiary Wing is carrying out similar hyper-local testing in Logan Australia. This means there’s certainly no major player emerging yet in the US - and the prime candidates are doing precisely what Manna is to get their foot in the door.
