Role
Who you are
- 10+ years of production software development experience
- Practical experience with Elixir or other functional programming languages like Erlang, Clojure, Scala, or Haskell
- Proven experience developing resilient and fault-tolerant architecture
- Demonstrated leadership ability, exceptional written and oral communication skills, and aptitude for working across disciplines
- Enjoys debugging and problem-solving systems supporting active spacecraft operations
- Experience with distributed systems and API design
- A strong bias towards action while understanding and rejecting the status quo
Desirable
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or similar discipline or relevant experience
- Deep understanding of Elixir and OTP including BEAM scheduling, GenServers, supervision trees, and the Actor model
- Experience with OAuth2 and Role-Based Access Controls
- Database experience with PostgreSQL and time-series databases like InfluxDB
- Experience with monitoring and tracing in a distributed system
- An understanding of containerized infrastructure and orchestration with Kubernetes
- Experience working with real-time or game engine backends
What the job involves
- Software is the central nervous system for True Anomaly’s engineering and product thesis. Software bridges the gap between military objectives, theoretical astrodynamics and the human and autonomous control of spacecraft and ground systems in time and space. True Anomaly is seeking a highly-experienced Staff Elixir Software Engineer to lead development of our distributed spacecraft ground control system
- You do not need to have experience building space ground systems or experience in aerospace. You’ll have ownership of challenging, greenfield problems and a chance to fundamentally impact the outcome of future conflict (and the future of the company)
- Design, develop, and sustain satellite command and control, mission planning, mission data processing and data analysis software systems using Elixir
- Create and implement clean software architectures that deliver consistent results from a growing team while scaling in complexity
- Leverage Domain-Driven Design to surface fundamental capabilities and decompose work scope into core business logic to achieve specific, measurable business outcomes
- Champion simple software development lifecycle processes that ensure transparency, traceability, and accountability
- Lead cross-discipline teams to deliver impactful results through collaboration, coordination, and systems integration
Our take
True Anomaly is a space tech startup composed of former military operators and engineers. The Colorado-based company is focused on building spacecraft and software solutions designed to secure U.S. commercial and military interests in space. It has already developed a fully-integrated platform with seamless satellite, navigation, and data-capture technologies that provide security and training for the quickly evolving space market.
Founded in 2022, True Anomaly has already designed its first spacecraft, the Jackal Autonomous Orbital Vehicle, which can be used to train operators on the ground or as intelligence-gathering tools against adversarial spacecraft. Alongside this, the startup has built a 35,000-square-foot facility in Denver to manufacture the Jackals and hired a team of close to 60 people.
With impressive capital gained at the end of 2023, the company validated the Jackal's technical and operational capabilities and made the necessary investments to scale production. Despite this healthy injection of funding, it still had to streamline staff in spring 2024, but is looking leaner and more agile for it, planning to partner with Firefly Aerospace to launch The Jackal in 2025.
