Role
Who you are
- BS or advanced degree in computer science or applicable experience
- 8+ years required, or 5+ years with an advanced degree working on server-side applications, specifically around API servers, third party integrations and data processing
- Experience at a high-growth startup a plus
- Expertise in a compiled language such as Go, C, or C++ is required
- Proficiency with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, including schema design, SQL tuning, and database monitoring is required
- Demonstrated experience designing and implementing scalable APIs; a solid understanding of design patterns, database design, and testing best practices
- Working knowledge of GraphQL APIs, CI and CD pipeline, AWS platform, Docker, and Kubernetes a plus
- Positivity; non-dogmatic, team-first attitude
- Flexibility; someone who is responsive and comfortable with ambiguity
- Highly disciplined approach to software design and development and ability to work on features independently (accurately forecast delivery milestones and work with stakeholders to ensure that expectations are met)
What the job involves
- As a Senior Backend Software Engineer, you will play a key role in all stages of the engineering lifecycle—designing, building, testing, and maintaining the SmithRx product suite
- You will champion best practices, coding standards, and large-scale system design while bringing a forward-thinking mindset to the team
- We are looking for versatile, self-driven engineers who demonstrate leadership, ownership, and a passion for tackling new challenges
- This role is part of the Member and Partner Portal team within the Application Engineering organization, which owns and operates the customer-facing experiences
- Success in this position requires a deep understanding of our systems, the ability to independently design interfaces and APIs, and close collaboration with frontend engineers and Product Managers to define features and requirements
- Beyond coding and design, you will also contribute to initiatives that enhance the availability, performance, and scalability of our services
- Focus on back-end architecture; designing, developing and maintaining SmithRx product features using various languages such as Golang, JavaScript/Typescript, Node, GraphQL, and SQL (amongst others), while leveraging full CI and CD to iterate quickly
- Collaborate with stakeholders and technical leads to understand functional and technical requirements to produce high-quality, scalable software and services
- Provide scope and risk estimates for system and feature builds by building technical design documentation
- Continually apply software development best practices, design patterns, testing, automation, tools and technologies
- Leverage AWS technologies, like Lambda and Fargate, to handle various types of jobs and batch processing
- Troubleshoot production issues by performing triages for issues that arise, assessing the impact, creating and executing a plan for short-term and long-term mitigation, and performing root cause analysis to prevent future occurrence of issues
- Coach/mentor junior team members in their assigned engineering projects by reviewing and providing feedback on code developed, and performing design and code reviews
- Work with senior leadership to turn technical vision into a tangible roadmap every quarter
- Be the cornerstone of a collaborative learning culture through mentorship, code reviews, the exploration of new technologies, and other innovations

PBMs (Pharmacy Benefit Managers) save payers and patients 40% to 50% on prescription drug and related medical costs in the US, compared to what they would spend without them. It’s generally accepted, though, that PBMs are working for profit and not solely on the customers benefit.
SmithRx is a company looking to reduce complications in the current system with its innovative PBM structure. It uses its cloud-based technology to present the most cost effective options transparently to self-insured businesses, supporting them in getting the lowest cost drugs they can, as well as making the transition to these alternatives seamless.
It does this by partnering with innovative drug companies, as well as applying coupons and making use of available savings and assistance programs. As the company does not take economics from the supply chain, it is able to work for its customers with no hidden agendas. Having recently secured funding, the company is looking towards continued growth as well as pursuing leadership in the sector.
