Role
Who you are
- The ideal candidate will be comfortable working throughout the data stack from deploying infrastructure to writing SQL transformations and building data applications. As an embedded data engineer you’ll be working directly with the Flexibility team members to understand and deliver their requirements
- Comprehensive knowledge of data design, data modelling, data management, and data visualisation
- Experience in a scripting language - ideally Python with knowledge of data science tooling such as Pandas, Numpy and Requests
- Experience with writing queries in SQL - DBT is a bonus
- Experience building software in a collaborative environment using Github for source control
- Experience with task management / orchestration systems such as Airflow is a bonus
- Knowledge of AWS infrastructure. Experience with Terraform is a bonus
- Knowledge of the energy system is desirable but not essential - we can teach you
- Be comfortable working with some ambiguity: The Flexibility team is busy scaling and as such specific responsibilities, projects and focus will evolve over time
- Be curious and self driven - it’s essential you have the initiative to make decisions yourself, and can find solutions to novel problems without lots of help and support
- Be highly data literate and numerate - can make sense of lots of data and shape it into a coherent structure
- Be a problem solver - you’ll need to be able to listen and understand the problems and requirements of the business and come up with pragmatic data solutions
What the job involves
- As an embedded data engineer you’ll take responsibility for building data pipelines, integrations, transformations and data applications to be used by our data analysts, scientists and the wider team
- Building and maintaining data pipelines to capture data from a variety of sources such as APIs, Google Analytics and Google Sheets
- Building and maintaining the dbt codebase to manage data transformations
- Building and maintaining BI dashboards and data apps to serve the wider business
- Working with stakeholders to understand and guide requirements
- Working with other OE regions to internationalise tooling
- Collaborate on project CrowdFlex which looks to understand consumer demand and domestic flexibility

According to Octopus, the energy industry in the UK is ruled by a handful of complacent companies peddling fossil fuels, pricing trickery, and poor customer service. Aiming to disrupt the status quo with sustainable energy, Octopus entered the market in 2016 and now supplies energy to millions of homes in a number of countries. Octopus has made a name for itself in energy circles largely because of its “Kraken” technology platform, which it claims is able to reroute energy from renewable sources around a network far more efficiently than competitors.
Octopus further differentiates itself through its aspiration to make everything as easy as possible for consumers, from the simplicity of their bills and the fact that customers are not locked into a contract, so they can leave at any time, to offering customer service over email and social media at times that suit customers. It aims to make the eco‐friendly choice the easy choice, so all of its tariffs use 100% green electricity, while being cheaper than competitors' non-green tariffs.
Its continually creating innovative new products too. For example, Octopus Tracker, where prices change daily to guarantee you get the market rate; Agile, where the price changes every half hour to enable you to benefit from cheap electricity when the sun shines, the wind blows, and the networks are under-utilised. One of the current challenges the company faces is that its products are more complex than its competitors, given that it uses 1000x more data than traditional energy companies. Because of this, it's exploring ways to explain to customers exactly how their products work.
