Role
Who you are
- Deep knowledge of cloud, infrastructure, and platform security best practices, including IAM, encryption, secrets management, threat modeling, vulnerability scanning, and compliance
- Proven expertise with AWS services, including EKS, RDS, ElastiCache, IAM, S3, and SecretsManager
- Extensive experience with Kubernetes, including cluster provisioning, scaling, and management
- Hands-on proficiency in designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions
- Strong scripting or programming skills in Go, Python, or Bash for building and maintaining infrastructure tooling
- Experience with monitoring, logging, and alerting tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, and Loki
- Demonstrated leadership in guiding teams, providing technical direction, and aligning projects with organizational goals
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders and drive cross-functional solutions
What the job involves
- As a Senior Infrastructure Engineer at Axios, you’ll architect and implement scalable, reliable, and secure solutions designed to meet the needs of our business and audience
- In this role, you will dedicate approximately 50% of your time to day-to-day infrastructure and cloud security responsibilities, as well as contribute to the development of our long-term security roadmap
- You'll oversee the deployment and optimization of cloud-based systems, ensuring security, scalability, and cost-effectiveness
- Lead and perform day-to-day infrastructure and cloud security tasks, including implementing controls, identifying potential vulnerabilities, and collaborating on remediation efforts
- Partner with engineering and leadership teams to help shape and maintain the group’s security roadmap
- Develop and maintain high-quality automation frameworks that streamline configuration and deployment processes
- Enhance monitoring systems, implement best practices, and improve insight into service performance, availability, and reliability
- Design robust, efficient infrastructure solutions that balance technical and business requirements
- Coach less-experienced engineers on infrastructure best practices, coding standards, and emerging technologies
- Partner with product, data, and QE teams to deliver end-to-end infrastructure enhancements
- What success looks like:
- Security & Compliance: Spent ~50% of time on proactive security initiatives, including automated vulnerability scans, implementation of controls, remediation, and contributions to the long-term security roadmap
- Cloud Infrastructure Excellence: Architected, deployed, and optimized AWS environments that meet defined performance, scalability, and cost-efficiency targets
- Automated Delivery: Developed and maintained CI/CD pipelines that deliver consistent, repeatable deployments
- Innovation & Tooling Adoption: Evaluated, piloted, and integrated new infrastructure tools and methodologies that measurably improve performance, security, and cost efficiency
- Observability & Reliability: Defined and implemented monitoring, alerting, and SLOs in collaboration with engineering teams
- Cross-Functional Impact: Collaborated with product and QE teams to deliver major infrastructure enhancements that directly support business goals
Our take
Axios is a digital news site covering business, tech, politics, and media trends, with a focus on smart and efficient coverage. Much like rival comparable sites The Economist and Politico, it’s also diversified its media to include podcasts, newsletters, and a mobile app. Whilst it remains a major national and international news outlet, it’s also pursuing a new avenue to help shore up its position: local news.
Local news outlets have been in sharp decline over recent years: it’s too costly, with too little revenue. Axios’ plan is to opt instead for local newsletters. They’re highly advertiser-friendly, and the model itself is exceptionally scalable. So Axios may succeed where traditional efforts by other outlets like The Huffington Post (and countless local outfits) have failed.
Axios was previously held up as an exception to the mergers and acquisitions other news outlets were having to undergo to weather the decline of print media. However, in order to fund the expansion into local news, Axios has been acquired by the global conglomerate (and previous investor in the company) Cox Enterprises. This is good news - Cox Enterprises owns and protects local newspapers in Ohio, and looks set to be a hands-off and values-aligned new Axios owner.
