- Highly technical with strong communication skills
- Proven previous experience as a .Net Engineer
- Strong knowledge of C#, ASP.NET MVC, WebAPI, RESTful services, .Net 8 Microservices
- Ability to troubleshoot production issues
- Experience with JavaScript
- MS SQL and Raven DB
- Experience with OAuth
Desirable
- Working in an Agile environment and team
- Past Scrum Master or Team Lead experience
- Docker, Solr, Kubernetes
- Test automation using Selenium Webdriver or Playwright
- Working with GitHub or Azure DevOps
- Knowledge of Ruby or other scripting languages
- Experience or knowledge of Github Copilot
- Experience with Helm and Argo for deploying applications
What the job involves
- Rakuten Kobo Ireland is seeking a Software Engineer for a contract role extending until the end of the year to join our amazing Web team
- You will be joining one of our development strike teams to deliver awesome new features for our many users to enjoy
- Our engineers are enthusiastic and operate across the development spectrum, from front-end to back-end to CI/CD and infrastructure
- We take full responsibility for our work, from requirements gathering and solutioning, to implementation and testing, to deploying and monitoring how our code behaves in front of real customers
- Kobo is looking for an engineer who shares these passions and is proud of the work they do
- Reporting to the Software Engineering Manager, the Software Engineer plays a vital role in all aspects of delivery from design, planning and implementation through to releasing
Our take
Long-form content is having a resurgence. That’s great news for the e-reader industry, of which Rakuten’s Kobo battles with Amazon’s Kindle for ownership.
The e-reader giant has changed tack in recent years to pursue growth via integrations and partnerships. A notable example is its native device integration with Pocket, a wishlist app loved by millions of readers.
The company is hoping that these partnerships and product improvements will allow it to finally break the US market where it most struggles for market share with Kindle.
Amazon has consistently shown its willingness to drop prices to protect its position in any market it plays in. That means that Kobo will have to demonstrate true product superiority to make a dent while protecting its margins.
