Role

Who you are

  • BS, MS or Ph.D. in computer science or related field, or equivalent work experience
  • 8+ years of relevant engineering hands-on work experience
  • Experience building Booking/Ordering or relevant systems
  • Strong coding abilities and experience with architectural patterns of large, high-scale applications
  • Experience architecting, building, and maintaining highly available services in a large service-oriented architecture (SOA)
  • Familiarity with patterns, libraries and frameworks for building and testing services, and service-to-service communication
  • Experience in partnering with other leaders in setting product strategy
  • Shipped several large scale projects with multiple dependencies across teams
  • Technical leadership and strong communication skills with ability to lead other experienced engineers

What the job involves

  • As a Booking Orchestration Staff Engineer, you will lead the development and refinement of major subsystems that power Airbnb bookings
  • You will put your experience with distributed systems and business workflow systems at work, playing a pivotal role in transforming the booking ecosystem
  • Lead booking engineering projects to improve booking experience, system scalability and performance
  • Mentor, guide, advocate and support the career growth of individual contributors
  • Write and review technical designs that solve large, open-ended foundational technical problems without clearly-known solutions
  • Ability to collaborate with other engineers and cross-functional partners across Bookings and organizations such as Payments and Trust to align on long-term technical solutions
  • Proactively grows knowledge of leading edge practices and trends involving workflow orchestration systems
  • Self-driven and ability to be accountable for key deliverables in our booking system

Our take

When Airbnb was originally founded, the product helped customers book air mattresses on people's apartment floors. Since then, Airbnb has had over a billion customers hosted through its platform. With more than 4 million registered hosts worldwide, it has grown into a major player in the hospitality sector.

Airbnb has been successful in disrupting the traditional holiday lettings sector. Before it existed accommodation was limited to hotels and bed and breakfasts, but Airbnb has mainstreamed the idea of renting out spare rooms or even entire homes. It has created a new sector of hosts purchasing properties to rent out on the platform and provides a level of flexibility and a range of offerings not previously possible for travelers.

Perhaps a victim of its own success, by 2022 supply of Airbnb-listed properties began to outstrip demand in some markets, as hosts overestimated the appetite for domestic travel. However, the company is still posting strong financials and has unveiled new tools to support its hosts in a tougher rental market. With a healthy bottom line and a huge user base, Airbnb is very likely to overcome the current market turbulence and continue its growth.
