Role
Who you are
- 8+ years of professional accounting experience
- CPA required, or a minimum of 5 years of CPA Audit firm experience
- Large Audit Firm experience strongly preferred
- Private accounting experience at a startup/high-growth company preferred
- Desire to work in a fast growing, sometimes unstructured environment where you can add a lot not only to your functional role but to all those around you
- An extremely high degree of ownership
- Self-starter with ability to work independently
- Excellent communication, both written and verbal
- Ability to problem solve and provide solutions on complex issues

What the job involves
- You will be the Leader of the Accounting team
- You will materially impact and help shape Papaya’s success by implementing and managing processes and resources, and leading annual audits
- Lead the Accounting function, including internal and external Accounting resources, setting it up for future growth
- Lead end-to-end annual financial statement audits: audit firm relationship, preparation, field work execution, audit reports and follow-ups
- Research and document appropriate US GAAP treatment for the different areas of the business. Write Accounting memos and policies
- Supervise Accounting Operations:
- Monthly financials and management reporting packages
- Review of month-end journal entries and account reconciliations
- Continuously optimize accounting processes
- Supervise the Tax function:
- Manage Federal and State tax returns
- Other tax filings (franchise, payroll)
- Actively participate in other functional areas – for example: cash management, work with AP/AR/Payroll Analysts as needed
- Actively support the growth of the business:
- Identify and drive process improvements. Design new processes as needed
- Work with internal teams to manage and improve data systems that impact the accuracy of the financials
- Complete special projects as needed
Our take
Papaya offers an instant payment service for physical bills. Users take a photo of a bill using their mobile phone, and are able to instantly pay using a designated card or bank account.
As consumers become more and more reliant on their mobile devices to manage their lives, Papaya has taken the complexity out of online banking and created a service that can be used on the go. The growth in cashless transactions in the US has been steep, and a variety of fintech startups have launched to capture this demand.
There are other players in the bill payments market, and many are consolidating, such as BillGo, which acquired rival company Prism. Papaya has gained traction through its simplicity and ease of use, but it will need to continue to innovate to avoid losing out to more prominent players in the space. A 2021 partnership with bank technology provider HC3 aims to do just that by allowing customers to pay bank or credit card bills using the Papaya app.
