What the job involves
- Reports to: People Strategy Implementation Lead
- The People Engagement Advisor is part of the People Projects and Engagement Team within the wider People function that supports all aspects of Working at the Crick, everything from ensuring people are paid to thriving within in our wider community
- The People Projects and Engagement team is responsible for overseeing and delivering people projects and initiatives, aligned to the People Strategy, ensuring these are prioritised and resourced accordingly to deliver expected outcomes
- The team provides expertise to the wider People team around, organisational development, culture, recognition, staff engagement and generally improving the employee experience working at the Crick
- The team makes best use of data and insights to target initiatives and improvements in line with our People Strategy
- The postholder will support and lead on the delivery of key initiatives and projects, and play a key part in ensuring these projects are promoted and communicated effectively to engage the wider community
- Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Lead or support on the development and execution of people initiatives, projects and wider activities from initial scoping through to completion, including preparing documentation for reporting and communication/engagement activities
- Set up and manage a range of engagement activities and events with various staff groups or forums to collaborate on projects and co-create solutions, making best use of digital solutions where appropriate
- Support the team with the rollout of the ‘all staff’ engagement survey (every 2 years) from launch through to dissemination of results
- Support team to set up and manage targeted pulse surveys and other continuous listening activities
- Analyse and make use of survey and people data, along with latest trends to inform projects and feed into solutions
- Manage the day to day running of the Crick’s recognition portal to ensure it is being used effectively and continuously improves as well as budget allocation
- Support the wider team to review and run the annual awards process
- Support the wider team and work alongside the internal communications team to target, communicate and promote benefits available at the Crick and help colleagues to understand key aspects of reward, e.g. annual pay review, benefits available and pay generally
- Support the wider People team with priorities and be an active member of working groups, forums or project teams
- Provide project and engagement advice to colleagues to support their initiatives
- Liaise with 3rd party supplier providers, ensuring purchase orders and invoices processed in a timely manner
- Contribute to people planning activities to feed into annual plan and identify areas for continuous improvement

Named for the co-discoverer of the DNA double helix, the Francis Crick Institute was founded in 2015 through the merger of the MRC's National Institute for Medical Research and CRUK's London Research Institute. Its mission is to push the boundaries of our understanding of how life works, making it the largest single-site biomedical research institute in Europe, with 2,000 staff and students supporting over 100 research groups.
One of the Institute's strengths is its ability to collaborate extensively with external research groups, boasting over 1,400 partnerships in more than 90 countries. These collaborations, however, pose data protection challenges due to the need to transfer vast amounts of sensitive information across borders. The Institute has addressed this by developing its own Trusted Research Environment toolkit, which allows remote teams to share data securely and compliantly in the cloud.
In recent news, the Francis Crick Institute has partnered with Broken String Biosciences to advance research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), demonstrating its commitment to impactful collaborations. Furthermore, the Institute secured £1 billion in funding back in 2022. Despite the UK's declining position in global science funding rankings, the Institute is maximising its effectiveness through the BRIDGE network and investments in AI and machine learning. A notable example is Google’s subsidiary DeepMind establishing a research lab within the Institute to enhance biology and genomics research.
