Our take
Maersk is a Copenhagen-based integrated container logistics company. Originally known for its fleet of enormous ships, the company is now active in ocean and inland freight transformation and related services, including supply chain management and port operation.
Until 2022, it was the largest shipping line by container capacity, before being unseated by Mediterranean Shipping Company. This can be accounted to the strategic decision to shift its focus from shipping toward associated, more profitable services. This includes air freight, trucking, and selling logistics software.
This places Maersk in an exciting position for potential growth as it reinvents itself as a one-stop shop for every step of the supply chain. Other transformative initiatives include becoming net-zero by 2040, and more immediately ensuring 30% of ocean journeys are powered using sustainable fuels. These decarbonisation efforts not only ensure a greener future, but a more competitive one for global trade.
