Who you are
- We’re looking for a Tax Lawyer or Tax Accountant with 2-7 years of experience in U.S. tax to join our team as a Tax Research Associate
- Our ideal candidate is well-versed in federal income tax
- . We’re looking for someone who is passionate about how technology can make tax law more transparent and accessible, and you’ll be instrumental in helping our team as we move this mission forward and take Ask Blue J to new heights
- We’re looking for a lawyer/attorney or accountant who is passionate about tax, and is excited about innovation and AI. Experience in tech is not required - we’re looking for an eagerness to put your transferable skills to use! Here are a few things we need from you:
- A JD/LLB or a CPA designation
- 2-7 years of professional experience working in either U.S. federal income tax
- LLM in Taxation or MTax (Master of Taxation) a strong asset
- Passion about how much more technology can do to improve the tax profession, and excitement about being a part of it
- An open mind and eagerness to learn
What the job involves
- As a Tax Research Associate, you will use your tax expertise to play a central role in continuing to develop Ask Blue J, our large language model-enabled tax research tool
- As a key member of our growing team of tax researchers, you’ll have the unique opportunity to participate in building the next generation of world-class tax research tools
- In this role, you will gain invaluable experience and learn from some of the best in the field of AI and tax. While we’re an AI company, experience in AI is not required
- Tax Research. You will use your excellent tax research skills and knowledge to quickly locate relevant primary and secondary sources using standard tax research skills; understand and summarize tax law questions in multiple areas and jurisdictions; evaluate sources for accuracy and currency; efficiently analyze source documents to support your analysis; adapt quickly to researching new jurisdictions and different areas of tax law; and assess the quality and accuracy of AI-generated tax analysis
- Teamwork. You will use your tax knowledge to work with tax lawyers, and alongside a team of analysts and data scientists to develop and improve our AI tools. You will build strong relationships with the entire tax research team and the data science team, working collaboratively and learning from each other. You will thrive in our environment where diverse thoughts are welcome and innovation is encouraged. Experience in machine learning and data science is not necessary – just an open mind and an eagerness to collaborate
- Strategic thinking. As a core member of our product team, you will have a sense of pride and ownership, constantly thinking strategically and critically about how we can continuously improve the Blue J products
- Evolving based on client needs. Our goal is to work in true partnership with our clients (tax professionals) by attending to their feedback, troubleshooting, and incorporating their recommendations to consistently and reliably add value. A key skill in this role is adaptability and openness to new ideas

Our take
Blue J Legal’s AI powered platform was created by a team of law professors and data scientists with the aim of helping fellow legal professionals gain a better understanding of individual cases, more quickly than if they researched an entire case themselves.
Having initially focused solely on legal cases, Blue J also now applies its predictive AI software to tax law – a tool which has become popular amongst tax attorneys and accountants, not just for its speed but for its junior-training applications.
While there’s been huge growth in the use of AI in the legal industry, its outcomes have not been without flaw. Blue J claims 90% accuracy for its predictive software, however there have been some cases documented across the whole industry where AI was biased against minority demographics for example.
The key thing for Blue J Legal moving forward is the accuracy of its software. If the company can maintain the very highest standards and maintain its AI’s integrity, it could become not just financially successful, but socially impactful.
