Who you are
- We are seeking a meticulous and detail-oriented Recon and Payments Specialist to join our dynamic team
- We are open to a variety of backgrounds, but we believe the best candidates will have some combination of the following:
- 4+ years of professional accounting and/bookkeeping and/or operational experience at a bank or a fintech company
- High level of SQL proficiency, capable of writing complex queries and analyzing large datasets
- Strong understanding of financial principles, reconciliations, and payment operations
- Advanced proficiency in Excel, including formulas, pivot tables, and macros
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail
- Excellent organizational and time management abilities, independent worker mindset
- Effective communication skills to collaborate across teams
- Resilient, proactive, and collaborative with a desire to work in a fast-growing, unstructured environment where you have the ability to have a massive impact
Desirable
- Experience with reconciliation systems and software
- Knowledge of payment rails or transaction platforms
- Background in tech-enabled financial operations
What the job involves
- Reporting to the Lead, Payment Ops, this role will play a critical operational part in Unit’s success story
- This role is pivotal in ensuring smooth operations, accurate reconciliations, and timely exception resolution
- You will work closely with the Dev and Operations teams, leveraging your technical skills and financial expertise to ensure Unit’s complex system is always reconciled to the penny
- Perform detailed reconciliation of transactions, accounts, and payment systems
- Analyze and resolve exceptions in records efficiently
- Manage and streamline exceptions processes to ensure accuracy and timeliness
- Utilize SQL for data analysis and troubleshooting exceptions
- Develop and maintain advanced Excel models to support reporting and operational needs
- Collaborate with cross-functional and bank partners teams to enhance operational workflows and address recon-related issues
- Prepare periodic reconciliation reports for internal and external stakeholders
- Stay updated on industry trends and best practices to enhance operational efficiency
Our take
Financial services are becoming increasingly vital for modern businesses, but building them is a lengthy, complex and often expensive process. Unit exists to make this easy, letting companies provide cards, bank accounts and payment products through its banking-as-a-service platform.
Embedded financial services are popular, as companies look for ways to attract customers with easy payment options and branded payments cards. Unit seeks to differentiate itself by providing a flexible, white label solution, that allows its customers to simply embed Unit's offerings within their product with easy API integrations. This has gained it a large and growing customer base including the likes of Homebase and Wingspan.
Unit's valuation exceeded $1 billion at its last fundraise in 2022, making it the first unicorn in the banking-as-a-service space. It is using this funding for product development, most recently moving into issuing charge cards. While this may bring it into competition with heavyweight incumbents Brex and Ramp, Unit's solution is more cost-effective and flexible for smaller companies and ties in with its existing offering. Despite lay-offs in 2024, Unit is well on its way to its goal of becoming a name ubiquitous among businesses while being unknown to the end user.
