Role
Who you are
- We're looking for someone who's passionate about code, curious, and eager to learn
- The passion to create something amazing, and the mindset to learn and grow with the company
- A strong understanding of the Python ecosystem with 3+ years of experience
- Knowledge of RESTful APIs is a must, preferably with web frameworks like Django or FastAPI
- Experience with maintaining versioned APIs
- Experience maintaining event-driven processing systems (AMQP, Celery)
- Experience with monitoring and debugging applications and infrastructure
- Experience working on processing large volumes of data
- Strong SQL and query analysis skills
- Strong skills in testing and test-driven development
- Proficient understanding of Git
Desirable
- Experience with Pydantic for data validation and serialization
- Experience with ElasticSearch for search and analytics
- Experience with maintaining high quality documentation for an externally facing product
- An ability to discuss vision and features within a team and propose creative solutions
- Familiarity with continuous integration and continuous deployment
- A knowledge of the protocols used within the EV charging industry
What the job involves
- You'll be working alongside the backend engineering team that provides the foundational infrastructure for our entire Electroverse ecosystem
- As part of our Core Squad, you'll focus on building and maintaining the robust OCPI connections and processing flows that power our platform - ensuring reliable, scalable systems that enable seamless integration with Charge Point Operators across our global network
- Your work will directly enable innovation across the organization by providing the solid technical foundation that other teams build upon
- Our project is at an exciting time in its lifecycle; maturing quickly but still with plenty of opportunities to work on big features and scaling the product to meet new challenges, giving you the chance to have a huge impact within the team and wider industry
- Overall, you'll work with a small, high-energy project team to bring the product to life - an exciting opportunity to work like a start-up within a rapidly scaling EnTech business
- Build and maintain the critical OCPI infrastructure that connects our platform with Charge Point Operators worldwide, ensuring reliable and scalable integrations
- Develop core backend features including pricing/tariff flows, location ingestion, session processing, and token management that power the entire Electroverse ecosystem
- Support CPO integrations through technical troubleshooting, onboarding assistance, and data quality monitoring as part of our team rotation
- Work in a cross-functional team to deliver robust, well-validated systems that serve as the foundation for innovation across the organization
- Contribute to infrastructure monitoring and maintenance across APIs, message queues, databases, and caching layers to ensure optimal performance at scale
- Adapt and optimise systems to handle increased scalability demands as we onboard large new contracts that will significantly increase traffic through the platform

According to Octopus, the energy industry in the UK is ruled by a handful of complacent companies peddling fossil fuels, pricing trickery, and poor customer service. Aiming to disrupt the status quo with sustainable energy, Octopus entered the market in 2016 and now supplies energy to millions of homes in a number of countries. Octopus has made a name for itself in energy circles largely because of its “Kraken” technology platform, which it claims is able to reroute energy from renewable sources around a network far more efficiently than competitors.
Octopus further differentiates itself through its aspiration to make everything as easy as possible for consumers, from the simplicity of their bills and the fact that customers are not locked into a contract, so they can leave at any time, to offering customer service over email and social media at times that suit customers. It aims to make the eco‐friendly choice the easy choice, so all of its tariffs use 100% green electricity, while being cheaper than competitors' non-green tariffs.
Its continually creating innovative new products too. For example, Octopus Tracker, where prices change daily to guarantee you get the market rate; Agile, where the price changes every half hour to enable you to benefit from cheap electricity when the sun shines, the wind blows, and the networks are under-utilised. One of the current challenges the company faces is that its products are more complex than its competitors, given that it uses 1000x more data than traditional energy companies. Because of this, it's exploring ways to explain to customers exactly how their products work.
