Who you are
- This role demands a finance leader with deep consumer technology experience who can be a self-starter and translate complex business dynamics into actionable business insights and drive measurable performance
- Tech industry expertise, combined with an experience in new ventures and hardware/infrastructure investments is a plus
- 12+ years of FP&A experience with at least 8+ years in technology companies, preferably in marketplace, platform, online advertising or network effect businesses
- Deep experience building and implementing ROI frameworks for customer acquisition, product development, expansion into new businesses, and support to business development teams
- Extensive track record of building and leading high-performing FP&A teams in fast-growth environments
- Strong executive presence with experience presenting to boards, investors, and C-suite leadership
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills with ability to translate complex financial concepts for diverse audiences
What the job involves
- We are seeking an exceptional Senior Director of FP&A to join our leadership team, reporting to the VP, Head of FP&A and IR
- This executive will drive strategic financial decision-making through advanced analytics, consumer tech expertise, and proven ROI frameworks, across the businesses that will accelerate Lyft’s growth: Autonomous Vehicles and Fleet Management, Lyft Media, Lyft Business & Healthcare, Strategic Partnerships and Rideshare Products
- Lead comprehensive financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting for the supported business leaders, including revenue and contracts optimization, complex modeling and scenario planning
- Partner directly with business leaders and executive leadership to develop and execute against strategic finance initiatives and key investment decisions
- Drive forecast updates, quarterly business reviews with sophisticated analysis of business performance
- Drive long-term planning (inclusive of capital allocation and capex planning) for emerging businesses
- Build and maintain advanced ROI frameworks across the business, inclusive of ROIC and Free Cash Flow
- Develop sophisticated attribution models and incrementality testing frameworks to optimize product investments
- Proactively identify opportunities to improve efficiency, profitability, and growth through deep-dive analysis and competitive benchmarking
- Design and implement automated financial models and dashboards that provide real-time visibility into key business drivers and performance indicators
- Drive scenario planning and sensitivity analysis to support strategic decisions around new businesses and investments, product launches, and capital allocation
- Manage the quarterly performance of the business
- Build, manage, and develop a high-performing FP&A team with expertise in marketplace dynamics and consumer tech metrics
- Establish best-in-class financial processes, including data collection and analysis
- Foster a culture of analytical rigor and business partnership across the finance organization
Our take
Lyft has aimed for consistent growth, making sure to pitch itself as a more reliable and friendly ride-sharing option than its main competitor, Uber. Uber has a greater market share and operates globally, but Lyft hopes to compete by its focus on ride-sharing over Uber's more diversified business approach and as a more rider-friendly and greener alternative to Uber.
Operating only in the USA and Canada, Lyft is in a position of being less affected by global events than Uber but also more vulnerable to local conditions. As an example, while it doesn't face the regulatory hurdles around employment rights that Uber does, it is unable to balance out the cost of the unusually expensive US auto insurance across its operations.
In 2022, Lyft acquired PBSC Urban Solutions, a bike-share equipment and technology supplier, allowing Lyft to compete in new verticals and reaffirming its commitment to green transportation. It has also trialed and launched Lyft Assisted, where drivers help passengers from their door into the car to get to medical appointments. These developments chime well with Lyft's unique selling point as a friendlier and more environmentally aware ride-sharing app.
