Sama, formerly known as Samasource, provides AI training data (extremely large datasets used to teach Machine Learning models) for companies in the fields of e-commerce, communications, media, med-tech, agriculture, robotics and autonomous transport.
It was started as a non-profit with the aim of sourcing talent and uplifting livelihoods for people in less wealthy areas of the globe, particularly in East Africa. However, the company transitioned to a for-profit model in 2019. This ethical and egalitarian approach to AI training has won Sama plenty of goodwill and business to boot, with customers including Google, Walmart, Ford, Microsoft and Nasa on board.
Since rebranding as Sama and promoting former COO Wendy Gonzales to CEO, a new focus has been put on developing further solutions which will allow entry into new industries, widening its already impressive customer base.
