Who you are

Degree in Statistics or a related quantitative field; Masters or PhD preferred
6+ years of experience in data science, applied machine learning, or a related field
Strong proficiency in Python, SQL, and experimentation/causal inference techniques
Familiarity with ranking, search, or recommendation systems (e.g., relevance modeling, click modeling, LTR methods)
Comfort with ambiguous, open-ended research questions and the ability to translate findings into actionable insights
Excellent communication skills — able to explain complex ideas simply and build trust across teams

Our goal is to combine cutting-edge machine learning with a deep understanding of patient and provider experience
We’re seeking a Senior Data Scientist with a passion for product and user experience to help us transform how patients discover and select the right therapist. Your mission: to deeply understand patient behavior and surface insights that directly inform and improve our product experience
In this role, you’ll combine behavioral data, experimentation, and user research to identify friction points, unmet needs, and optimization opportunities across the patient journey. Your work will guide how we design, prioritize, and evaluate changes to search and matching experience
You’ll collaborate closely with product managers, engineers, designers, and user researchers to turn insights into impactful product decisions. This is a unique opportunity to apply scientific rigor and human-centered thinking to a deeply meaningful challenge: helping people access personalized, effective mental healthcare
Analyze patient behavior and funnel performance to identify UX pain points and drop-off drivers
Partner with user research to combine qualitative and quantitative insights into a unified view of the patient journey
Develop frameworks to measure relevance, conversion signals, and long-term patient outcomes
Collaborate with product, clinical, and engineering teams to define success metrics and guide experimentation
Clearly communicate findings, recommendations, and business implications to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

Headway connects clients with therapists who accept insurance as payment and provides independent practitioners with the tools and resources needed to serve their patients and manage administrative workloads.

Headway’s concept is timely, with national mental health under particular strain following events from the past few years. The company facilitates over 600,000 appointments per month and has attracted backing from the likes of Accel and Google Ventures.

Covering 16 states and the District of Columbia, the company intends to broaden its presence across the US with over $325M in funding behind it. This is a crucial avenue for further growth, as medical care deserts across the US mean the potential market is vast.
