Our take

Supercritical is a startup offering businesses the option to reach carbon net zero output. It measures a company’s carbon footprint, creates an actionable plan for reducing emissions, and recommends a portfolio of high-quality carbon removal offsets to buy. It does this through unprecedented transparency of price, availability and quality, so its customers know exactly how its carbon output is being reduced, and what effect this reduction will have.

Businesses create a lot of pollution that either needs to be lowered or removed from the atmosphere to keep the earth’s warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius. With a greater carbon footprint than the entire aviation industry, Supercritical has made the tech industry an initial target.

When companies buy conventional offsets, the carbon emitted still remains in the atmosphere as someone else gets paid not to emit the same amount of carbon. Supercritical differentiates itself by focusing exclusively on carbon removal offsets that actively remove toxins from the atmosphere through methods such as tree planting, biochar, enhanced weathering, bio-oil sequestration, and direct air capture. It partners its customers with teams of climate scientists on carbon removal procurement, offering live pricing and granular vetting to simplify carbon reduction for the fluid and volatile tech industry.

Supercritical counts well-known businesses The Economist Group, Virgin Atlantic and Rothschild & Co as customers. It is using its Series A funding from Lightspeed Ventures to grow its carbon removal to a mass scale, and it is well placed to do so with its unique strategy.

Company values

  • Ownership mentality: We relish autonomy and we create it for others. We are deeply curious and thrive on understanding the root cause of complex problems. We take ownership over our own and our team’s development by giving and soliciting direct and actionable feedback.
  • Move fast: We identify the most important problems to solve and cut everything else. We test ideas early so we don’t waste time on dead ends. We default to action and deliver awesome results.
  • Radiate positive energy: We come to problems with energy and passion. We nurture new ideas and engage positively in testing them. We inspire our colleagues to go further and are resilient to set backs. We recharge by taking time off. We are here for a great day, not a long day.
  • Communicate proactively: We communicate simply and directly. We broadcast updates, insights and lessons learnt, especially when things haven’t gone to plan. We give as much context as possible so our teammates can make great decisions.
