Role
Who you are
- You have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience
- You have 4+ years of experience in software development
- Proficiency in Kotlin
- You are experienced with modern Android development tools and practices
- Experience working with AndroidX and other Jetpack libraries, Kotlin Coroutines, MVVM, Android UI and animations, Ktor, accessibility
- Experience with Jetpack Compose
- You provide quality feedback on designs written by other members of the team
- Experience with audio/video streaming with Exoplayer
- Ability to provide architectural guidance on app features
- Familiarity and working experience with Agile development methodologies
- Ability to quickly learn and apply new technologies
- Excellent communication and creative problem-solving skills
- Familiarity with common CI/CD practices and GIT workflows
- Commitment to producing quality code and documentation
What the job involves
- Crunchyroll, LLC is on the lookout for a passionate Software Engineer III, Android to elevate our Android teams
- As a Software Engineer III, you'll be instrumental in producing robust applications that deliver content that will delight and engage our audiences, partners and internal stakeholders
- You will also be ensuring our software products are of the highest quality and reliability
- You will be a vital part of the development team, advocating for top-tier test methodologies and best practices, providing feedback on developer-authored tests, and providing strategic direction for our automated test coverage with comprehensive end-to-end system-level tests
- In the role of Software Engineer III , you will report to the Manager, Software Engineering - Android
- The Android development teams support millions of users across our mobile applications, tablet, automotive, and living room devices
- We collaborate with product, design, program management, video engineering, platform engineering, and service monetization to deliver a unique and enriching experience for our customers
- We embody Crunchyroll’s collaborative spirit and work with several teams to engineer scalable solutions that can be shared across all client platforms

In recent decades, anime - encompassing Japanese, Korean, and Chinese animation 0 has transitioned from a niche interest to a formidable industry, boasting a global market worth approximately $30B. Despite this growth, distribution has historically posed challenges, with series and films often reaching overseas audiences through disparate channels, if at all. Crunchyroll emerged to address this issue by consolidating the largest collection of anime into a single streaming service.
Sony's acquisition of Crunchyroll in 2021 for $1.75B expanded the platform's reach, integrating Sony's extensive animation library into its offerings. this move also positioned Crunchyroll for heightened competition against streaming giant Netflix, known for its substantial investments in anime production and acquisition. Currently, Crunchyroll maintains an unrivaled library of anime content, boasting over 44,000 episodes that have attracted over 0M paying subscribers.
While Crunchyroll initially offered a free, ad-supported tier to its vast community, it appears poised to phase out this option, transitioning to a subscription-based model for all new series. Despite this shift, the platform has implemented a global reduction in fees to stimulate subscription uptake. The success of this strategy remains to be seen, but past experiences with companies like Hulu suggest that it may drive subscription growth and mitigate piracy
