Role

Who you are

  • We’re looking to add a technical, hands-on, and mission-driven Technical Program Manager (TPM) for the Infrastructure team
  • The team is looking for a person with a technical background, who understands the problem space, drives requirements, and will apply their storage & data expertise to solve strategic problems at Airbnb
  • We are looking for candidates who share our passion for tackling complexity, and delivering predictable and consistent results
  • This person should have a strong sense of ownership and ability to think and work strategically with stakeholders
  • At least 13 years of work experience, with at least 11 years as a TPM or relevant experience
  • Experience leading programs involving scalable, reliable storage big data systems (e.g., databases, file systems, data analytics platforms). Experience with near real-time data transport, distributed storage or analytic systems a plus (e.g., Kafka, K8, MongoDB, Starrocks)
  • Experience working with customers on how their workloads can best leverage the underlying infrastructure
  • Experience working with both online and offline systems
  • Strong communications skills - able to capture customer requirements and distill customer-specific requirements and/or help onboard customers to the systems one has supported
  • Demonstrated ability to work through ambiguity to detailed solutions. You can take a vague problem, crisply frame the challenge, identify a path forward, and drive an initiative over the finish-line
  • Self-motivated, proactive and proven ability to adapt well and work with teams having different operating cadences
  • Sound business judgment, a proven ability to influence others, strong analytical skills, and a track record of taking ownership, leading data driven analyses, and influencing results
  • Experience developing and fine tuning processes that speed work up, and flexibility to get things done
  • Detail-oriented and able to understand the bigger picture by using your technical expertise and problem solving abilities to prioritize and manage blocking issues
  • Experience working in a highly cross-functional environment where communication with multiple functions (Privacy, Product, Engineering, Data Science) is imperative
  • Excellent written and oral business communication and people skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders

What the job involves

  • This person will partner with our Data engineering & product teams to build/enhance data driven decision making across multiple areas in Airbnb
  • They will partner closely with senior ICs and engineering directors across Airbnb on processes, strategy and execution
  • Own and drive storage initiatives across teams related to the application of data movement; be part of the critical decision making process from ground up to launch
  • Collaborate with the online & offline storage teams in the design and deployment of platform functionality that enables Airbnb to efficiently manage data movement and transformations (e.g. source connectors, schemas, stream processing, and sinks)
  • Consume complex data and information to drive insights and create impactful stories
  • Enable cross functional collaboration between vertically oriented teams to solve high priority company projects
  • Support the teams to deliver work across multiple tracks with high quality by streamlining the team’s practices and processes, and optimizing ways of working
  • Think both broadly about overall outcomes while using good judgment on where to focus in on details
  • Influence the technical direction of projects to meet the data stakeholders’ needs while upholding quality. Quickly validate project ideas through iterative development, and pivot as necessary
  • Showcase the team’s work in front of senior leaders, clearly communicate trade-offs, risks, and opportunities to a broad set of stakeholders
  • Proactively share context with the team, and help the team connect the dots of their work with broader company and organizational initiatives
  • Be able to answer questions about ongoing initiatives, architecture and systems, staffing, and priorities
  • Support other data TPMs working on related tracks of work

Our take

When Airbnb was originally founded, the product helped customers book air mattresses on people's apartment floors. Since then, Airbnb has had over a billion customers hosted through its platform. With more than 4 million registered hosts worldwide, it has grown into a major player in the hospitality sector.

Airbnb has been successful in disrupting the traditional holiday lettings sector. Before it existed accommodation was limited to hotels and bed and breakfasts, but Airbnb has mainstreamed the idea of renting out spare rooms or even entire homes. It has created a new sector of hosts purchasing properties to rent out on the platform and provides a level of flexibility and a range of offerings not previously possible for travelers.

Perhaps a victim of its own success, by 2022 supply of Airbnb-listed properties began to outstrip demand in some markets, as hosts overestimated the appetite for domestic travel. However, the company is still posting strong financials and has unveiled new tools to support its hosts in a tougher rental market. With a healthy bottom line and a huge user base, Airbnb is very likely to overcome the current market turbulence and continue its growth.
