Role
Who you are
- 3+ years of experience in a law firm, in-house legal/compliance department (preferred experience from an insurance carrier, MGA, or agent/broker), or government experience at a department of insurance
- NY Bar license or ability to satisfy NY In-House Registration requirements
- Property and casualty insurance license preferred; CPCU certification desirable
- Strong understanding of insurance regulations and compliance requirements
- Proficiency in conducting risk assessments, developing risk management strategies and implementing control frameworks
- Effective communication skills (written and verbal), capable of presenting findings and recommendations to various audiences
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and professional development
- Passion for insurance and ability to synthesize federal, state, and local statutes and regulations

- The Assistant In-House Counsel role offers a compelling opportunity to work at the dynamic intersection of regulation, compliance, and the insurance industry
- In this position, you will partner cross-functionally with Product, Technology, Risk, Underwriting, Customer Success, Marketing, and Corporate Development to provide practical, business-oriented legal guidance
- Beyond ensuring regulatory compliance, this role plays a key part in shaping and aligning legal strategy with broader business objectives
- Monitor, analyze, and ensure the Company’s compliance with applicable insurance laws and regulations, industry standards, and best practices
- Work cross-functionally with the Risk, Underwriting, and Customer Success departments to provide legal guidance in underwriting and claims processes. This includes responding to internal and external questions concerning claims processing, underwriting, and application of policy terms
- Assist in the strategic development and deployment of insurance products
- Review and respond to regulatory inquiries
- Maintain insurance producer licenses for entity, individual agents/brokers and claim adjusters, including by supervising continued education requirements of licensed personnel through third-party providers
- Navigate cross-disciplinary and cross-industry questions addressing landlord-tenant law and insurance regulations
- Develop internal programs and resources, including training materials for various departments regarding compliance, best practices, and risk management
- Contribute to designing and executing compliance testing and monitoring programs. Prepare and present comprehensive compliance reports to senior management, highlighting concerns, recommendations, and progress on compliance initiatives
- Coordinate with the Marketing department to ensure all advertising and marketing materials comply with applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to address and remediate compliance-related issues and findings
- Support Product and Technology teams in navigating consumer protections, industry standards, and best practices in the deployment of insurance products and SaaS platforms
- Assist in the negotiation, drafting, and review of contracts to support time-sensitive sales and operations matters
- The position will directly report to the Head of the Legal and collaborate extensively with the leadership of multiple teams, including Risk, Underwriting, Customer Success, Marketing, and Corporate Development departments

Our take
Home rental rates across the US are soaring. On average, rent went up by over 10% in a single year between 2021 and 2022, while in some cities that increase is as much as 40%. Renters are now struggling more than ever to qualify for homes and afford security deposits, which also impacts landlords who lack security.
TheGuarantors, which is a licensed insurance agent and broker bridges this gap by acting as a co-signer, then offering to cover and underwrite security deposits if necessary in exchange for a percentage fee of the monthly rent.
There’s been a lot of movement in the rental startups space of late, with venture capital being poured into companies like rent-to-own Divvy and rent now, pay later startup Jetty.
TheGuarantors, however, has seen immense user uptake on its platform and has won the capital backing of Portage Venture, which it intends to use to scale both its product offering and staff headcount. This, plus B Corp certification awarded in 2024, will help TheGuarantors expand its market visibility.
