Who you are
- The ideal Retention Manager candidate loves pop culture content, and has a knack for knowing what will do well, at what time, and in what channel – and is also analytically savvy, able to report on what worked, what didn’t, identifying a “why”, and making strategic recommendations
- 5+ years of experience in retention marketing, content marketing, with a strong passion for content
- Experience with CRM platforms such as Iterable, Braze and Klavyo a must
- Previous experience with MMPs such as Appsflyer, Adjust or Kochava desired
- Documenting, reporting, analyzing and and making recommendations on
- Social media experience is a huge plus
- Experience in cross-channel growth marketing a plus
- Ability to multitask and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Problem-solving mindset with strong attention to detail
- Excellent writing skills
- Knowledge of content analytics (clicks, sessions, downloads, etc.)
- Strong attention to detail, tracking different placements and different results
- Experience with photo editing a plus (resizing images for different placements)
- Publishing industry experience, preferably in a fast-paced newsroom
- Self-motivated
- A team player ready to work in a fast-paced environment
What the job involves
- The PEOPLE App team is seeking a Retention Marketer (Contract) to develop and implement push and email retention strategies, best practices, and A/B testing to increase app engagement, reduce churn, and improve LTV
- Reporting to the VP, Marketing, you will be responsible for developing and implementing Push and Email strategy for the PEOPLE app
- The Retention Manager will primarily work with content from the PEOPLE App, and experiment with topics, formats, channels, and distribution strategies to put the best PEOPLE App content in front of new and existing audiences, driving measurable results
- The Retention Manager will work closely with the PEOPLE App Editorial team to understand the content calendar and select the right content for promotion via email, via push notification, on the PEOPLE homepage, and on PEOPLE’s social channels
- Developing and executing the daily email and push content calendar ensuring alignment with brand priorities, trending stories and new launches
- Setup and launch Push and Email campaigns targeted towards the PEOPLE App users
- Build and maintain a calendar
- Write email headlines and push notifications
- Collaborate with Editorial and creative teams to develop calendar based on editorial priorities and data-driven decision making
- Work cross-functionally with Owned and Paid social to surface trending stories across platforms
- Regularly compile reports, share findings and make recommendations
- Stay on top of the latest push and email trends
- 80% Deeply understand the PEOPLE App content library, and learn the workflows of the overall PEOPLE operation to secure the right promotion, at the right time, for the right piece of content from the PEOPLE App (and measure success!)
- 20% Collaborate with the overall PEOPLE team on new workflows, new placements, and new ideas
- 40 hours a week

Formed from the 2021 acquisition of Meredith by Dotdash, Meredith Dotdash is the largest digital and print publisher in the US, encompassing over 40 brands, such as PEOPLE, Better Homes & Gardens, Verywell, Allrecipes, and many more.
The approach that built this media giant was to build websites with fast load-times and few adds. A clean site keeps readers longer, boosting its rankings in search algorithms. Ads can then be less frequent but sold at a premium, because of the readership. The company was also an early adopter of affiliate links through product reviews and articles that suggest items for purchase.
The merger of the Dotdash and Meredith teams and tech brought benefits in both directions, making Meredith sites faster and increasing story output for Dotdash. In 2023, the company launched a targeting tool named D/Cipher - that makes intent-based targeting possible at scale, without cookies. This showcases that the giant is entirely able to move at the front of the tech-evolving ad media landscape. Indeed, Meredith Dotdash is reportedly bucking the trend of news media financial downturns in 2025 with digital revenue increases of 13% year on year.
