Who you are
- 10+ years of experience with software development and architecture
- 2+ years of experience in GraphQL
- Experience and/or interest in Federation, Entities, Governance, architecture, and developer tooling
- Experience and/or interest in building tooling that makes your engineering colleagues successful
- Great communicator: We regularly make changes to how product engineers work, and must be able to effectively plan, document, consult, and collaborate with them
- The ability to use anecdotes and data to illustrate the impact of your work
What the job involves
- Own problems, not just code
- Identify ways to make Gusto's codebase more effective at scale
- Participate in thorough, rigorous discussions about how to measure and solve problems
- Support, up-level, and mentor fellow engineers through Slack, pairing sessions, and presentations
- Collaborate and communicate changes with the engineering org through ADRs
- Integrate, add, build, and improve tooling to support Gusto's frontend development
- Run migrations to improve Gusto's codebase using a combination of collaboration, manual upgrades, and codemods
- Enforce and promote patterns and practices through custom analysis

For many small businesses, vital administrative tasks such as payroll, taxes, and benefits are manual tasks that take time and energy - which many SMB owners don’t have. The co-founders of Gusto all come from small business backgrounds, which is why they created a platform that would handle employee payments, benefits administration, and compliance support specifically for small businesses.
The company may have started slowly, as the founders focused on nailing each individual aspect of Gusto’s operations, but has now skyrocketed to unicorn status with more than 400,000 customers and a multi-billion dollar valuation. And in 2021, Gusto began acquiring other companies to strengthen its offering and position in a competitive market, including the likes of Ardius, Symmetry and Guideline.
Through its continued acquisitions and fundraising efforts, the company has carved out a strong position for itself in the space. It continues to expand its platform, for example by partnering with Parafin to launch a payroll line of credit for small businesses, and more recently launching Cofounder, an AI teammate tailored to the needs of small businesses.
