Prepared's mission is to build software that saves lives, facilitating rapid emergency service response by providing real-time data at emergency locations.

Role

Who you are

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • Proficiency in React and TypeScript
  • Familiarity working with GraphQL APIs
  • Deep understanding of front-end architecture, including state management (e.g., Redux, Context API, etc.)
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced and dynamic startup environment
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience working closely with product and design teams

Desirable

  • Experience in an early-stage startup
  • Experience with real-time communication apps

What the job involves

  • We are seeking passionate and experienced frontend engineers with a strong focus on resiliency, real-time responsiveness, and seamless integration across web and desktop platforms. This is an opportunity to join a small, growing engineering team (currently 20 engineers) and make a large impact while operating with a high degree of autonomy and ownership
  • While most legacy software in 911 centers is clunky and outdated, we are dedicated to crafting seamless and intuitive user experiences that support the critical work that our users are doing every day. This role is pivotal in driving the development of scalable, reusable, and high-performance user interfaces
  • You’ll work closely with design and engineering teams to craft delightful user experiences while ensuring that our codebase is clean, maintainable, and future-proof
  • As an early member of the team, you will also play a key role in shaping the foundation of Prepared’s engineering culture
  • Collaborate with designers, product managers, and other engineers to translate complex user requirements into performant, intuitive features
  • Drive the adoption of best practices in front-end development in order to meet the high-resiliency needs for complex and mission-critical systems
  • Heavily influence architectural design and implementation of scalable and reusable front-end systems using React
  • Analyze and address architectural challenges, such as state management, rendering performance, and scaling complex UIs
  • Contribute to and advocate for front-end testing strategies, ensuring high-quality code through unit and integration tests
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers, fostering growth and knowledge-sharing across the team

Our take

Every day, half a million Americans call 911 to report an emergency, and whilst emergency services save lives, their speed and effectiveness are limited by technology. Even though most emergency phone calls are made on smartphones, emergency departments rely exclusively on the anecdotal data provided during phone calls.

Prepared provides a real-time data system for emergency services, allowing 911 callers to livestream, text photo/video messages over SMS, provide pinpoint-accurate GPS location in DMS format and integrate into existing PSAP processes easily. In doing so, Prepared empowers 911 operators to deploy the most effective response for both emergency and non-emergency situations.

The company has shown the potential to significantly innovate upon emergency services (which have traditionally lacked funding). Prepared have also avoided the often long cycle of government procurement by offering the service for free, and currently have over 200 cities signed up, across 40+ states (representing around 20 million citizens). It is unclear how the company will monetize in the future, but they have mentioned a possible freemium element to its service down the line.
