- This role is perfect for someone passionate about the entertainment industry and eager to help companies in this space market to their most dedicated audiences
- 10+ years of direct experience in direct ad sales, media buying, or digital advertising in the entertainment industry
- Experience in managing entertainment clients throughout the funnel with a deep understanding of their challenges and objectives
- Experience in building relationships with top marketing decision-makers at entertainment studios and their agencies
- Experience in managing clients throughout the funnel with a deep understanding of their challenges and objectives
- Ability to analyze data and identify insights to assess campaign performance
- Ability to proactively troubleshoot and problem solve quickly and through the proper escalation channels
- Experience with marketing and ad technology ecosystem including ability to collect and convey product needs as well as working cross-functionally to diagnose and solve technical problems for clients
- Experience in negotiating and structuring standard and non-standard ad buying agreements
- Experience in growing, mentoring, and managing sales teams
What the job involves
- We are seeking an experienced Director of Sales to join as a founding member of the sales team for our Advertising Solutions (Quests) business line
- This is a global role where you will work in a dynamic, zero-to-one environment to build and grow a new, fast-expanding business line at Discord
- You will harness your prior experience in advertising/media/marketing spaces and bring a combination of strategic business thinking, industry relationships, product insights, and an ability to build a significant, recurring book of business with clients
- Prospecting and sourcing media buying opportunities with film studios, streaming platforms, television networks, and their media agencies
- Building & deepening relationships within the entertainment industry with executive stakeholders & key decision makers at the brand direct and agency levels
- Helping clients achieve business and marketing goals via Discord’s ad solutions
- Building and scaling a best-in-class sales team within the entertainment vertical
- You will define and execute effective and repeatable sales motions and operational processes. You will apply an account planning process to prioritize accounts, grow revenue, educate clients, lead strategic client conversations, and navigate complex relationships
- You will create and convey compelling sales presentations and proposals utilizing internal and external data
- You will become an expert in Discord solutions and adapt recommendations to suit varying client needs
- You will be responsible for consulting with clients and contributing to marketing and media plans that enables them to reach their target audiences on Discord
- You will demonstrate expertise around the gaming, media, and marketing spaces to clients, within Discord, and in industry forums
- Over time you may also be called upon to manage teams
Our take
Discord is an industry giant in the chat app space. The free platform has rapidly become one of the most popular services in the sector since being founded in 2015. It counts over 150 million active users in 19 million communities, successfully expanding beyond its original focus on video game players to become a broader social networking app and public forum.
Discord's userbase has grown rapidly as remote work has become the norm and a new generation of internet users has come online, attracted to its youthful presentation and plethora of gaming and social tools. It has since fended off takeover bids from Microsoft and interest from other giants such as Amazon and Twitter, and has grown into a profitable company, funded by optional subscription fees and commissions from sales through the platform.
Discord’s remarkable growth, however, is not without obstacles. The company faces competition from deep-pocketed giants like Facebook, and regulatory concerns from those worried about the platform’s relatively light chat moderation. However, the company has the resources and expertise to adapt. For example, the acquisition of harassment detection software company Sentropy will go a long way towards placating the concerns of critics, as will the 2024 acquisition of teen app Gas used to give anonymous compliments to friends. All of these purchases are part of Discord's move to expand out of its mostly gaming-focused customer base.
