Who you are
- BA/BS in computer science or equivalent industry experience
- 3+ years of experience as software engineering manager
- 5+ years of working in software engineering
- Development experience in one or more general purpose programming languages such as: Golang, Python, C/C++, Java
- Experience designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability, and scalability) of new and existing systems
- Proven ability to identify user needs and deliver customer-centric product solutions
- Experience developing and running large-scale consumer services
Desirable
- Familiarity in the AWS ecosystem of service
- Experience utilizing Agile development methodologies
- Experience in hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of software engineers
- Experience with full-stack or front-end development
- Deep knowledge of Golang
- Familiarity with Twitch, either as a viewer or creator (or both!)
What the job involves
- The Twitch On Demand team drives community engagement through non-live offerings, specifically owning Video on Demand (VODs), Clips, and Stories. We manage numerous services that enable viewers to consume content on their own schedule and help creators expand their reach
- As an Engineering Manager within the Engagement Growth organization, you will lead one of three engineering teams. Your team will collaboratively build experiences designed to keep viewers actively engaged with Twitch
- This role involves close partnership with product managers, designers, and data scientists to develop systems serving millions of daily users
- Build the systems that provide the critical connection between viewers and creators within the Twitch ecosystem
- Design and run consumer-scale services powering VODs, Clips and Stories for millions of daily users
- Power and enable AWS applications at scale
- Partner with Product, Design and Data
- Drive the professional growth and career advancement of team members through structured development planning, mentorship, and strategic talent management
- Develop a long term roadmap and set direction for a team of 10 engineers
Our take
Twitch is the world's leading video platform for gamers, allowing users to livestream gaming sessions and curate a dedicated community for their content. By dedicating the platform to gaming alone, it has amassed a loyal following of fans, and been able to launch its Partner Program where streamers can monetize their livestreams, incorporate corporate partnerships, and even attend TwitchCon, a convention where dedicated gamers can socialize.
Twitch's acquisition by Amazon in 2014 saw its viewers double in a year, bringing the platform to a wider audience. However, with YouTube streaming popularity on the rise, it has big competition to contend with, as some popular streamers prefer going live on the video giant. Interestingly, a recent move by the platform was to enable its partner streamers to make live content on other platforms - previously inhibited by its exclusivity clause - which may combat the possibility of losing streamers permanently to YouTube.
In 2022, Twitch had to contend with backlash for its proposal to cut creator income by reducing their cut of subscription earnings. However, with the plan only affecting a minute number of creators, the controversy appears to have died down. Needless to say, Twitch is for now entirely comfortable in the market - with possible plans to extend past gaming bringing the chance to generate more popularity yet.
