Who you are
- The successful candidate must excel in working in a highly collaborative environments with business experts and the technologist in order to conduct independent research and prototyping innovative solutions
- The candidate must have a strong passion to apply machine learning methods to a variety of domains involving large language models and natural language processing
- The candidate will be a quick learner, results oriented and with the ability to work in an agile environment
- They will be adept at identifying opportunities for enhancing processes across multiple departments and will play an important role in cultivating an environment that encourages and embraces creative thinking throughout the organization
- Currently in penultimate year of university, on track for a 2.1 or higher, with a degree completion date of Spring 2026
- Computer Science, Data Science or related fields degrees preferred
- A strong interest in Finance and Investment Management
- Strong computer skills, specifically in Microsoft Office applications and sourcing data from the internet and various publications
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Confidence and ability to work both, independently and in a highly collaborative team environment
- Curious, detail-oriented and motivated to identify solutions to complex problems
What the job involves
- The Innovation and Data Insights team is seeking a summer intern, based in Barings’ London office to assist the team evaluating innovation opportunities and advance modern methods to solve a wide range of real-world problems involving the use of artificial intelligence
- This dynamic environment offers a unique opportunity to engage with a range of diverse projects and novel approaches that could profoundly transform how the firm operates
- 9-week programme with potential to convert to full-time offer based on strong performance and the needs of the business
- Support the Innovation & Data Insights team: assessing creative and innovative solutions, prototyping innovative solutions, researching emerging technology trends and applications, assisting with special ad-hoc projects, presentations and initiatives
- Support the delivery of innovation projects from conception to implementation
- Foster a culture of creativity and experimentation within the organization

With a history dating back more than 260 years, Investment Management Group Barings was originally Britain’s oldest merchant bank and set up an asset management division in the 1950s. By the mid-90s, its original banking division collapsed due to scandals concerning its executives and its investment management department took center stage. Through a series of acquisitions, Baring Asset Management became Barings in 2016, alongside the now-merged Cornerstone Real Estate Advisors, Wood Creek, and Babson Capital Management.
With a portfolio worth more than $347 billion, Barings has come full circle over its two-and-a-half-century life. During the 2010s, its acquisitions and growth saw it evolve into a global leader, with subsidiaries in Europe, the Americas, and Asia. Focusing on private and public equity, real estate, private credit, capital, and insurance solutions, Barings has run with the fast-moving shifts in the investment sector to fund electric vehicle projects, fintech platforms, and digital companies to great success.
In 2023, Barings swooped in to save bankrupt real estate deals in Arizona and secured leading bank tenants Santander and HSBC at its state-of-the-art office development in Manchester, UK. In 2024 it led a funding round of Morgan Stanley's World 50, exemplifying its influence on the world's top investment banks. With many arms to its company, Barings can weather setbacks as a whole, whether that be the collapse of Barings-backed internet provider GigaMonster or restructuring the ailing cinema chain Vue.
