Who you are
- The ideal candidate is an experienced CPA with at least 4 years of progressively responsible experience at either a Big 4 public accounting firm or a publicly traded, high-tech organization with a minimum of 2 years in a revenue-specific role
- You should have experience from a global, growing software company that has on-premise software revenue and SaaS. This position reports to the Director, Technical Revenue
- BA/BS degree in Accounting, Finance or related field
- 4+ years of progressively responsible experience at either a Big 4 public accounting firm or a global, publicly traded high-tech organization with a minimum of 2 years in a revenue role
- Strong knowledge of US GAAP and primarily revenue recognition (ASC 606) as it applies to on-premise software revenue and SaaS
- Demonstrated experience thinking strategically about issues, leading to recommendations and action plans
- Attention to detail and experience multitasking and prioritizing to deliver impact in a fast-paced environment
- Strong analytical and problem-resolution skills, including the ability to research accounting literature and simplify complex situations
- Excellent interpersonal skills (oral and written) and the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the company
- Intermediate to advanced Excel skills
- CPA certification or equivalent practical experience
What the job involves
- The Manager, Technical Revenue will be an international leader on behalf of the Technical Revenue Team and will be a key business partner to Sales, Sales Ops, Business Development, Legal, and FP&A
- In this role, you will be the subject matter expert on revenue accounting and engage with the business to provide revenue recognition guidance in various areas, including contract reviews, non-standard sales deals, and new product introductions
- You will also be responsible for documenting the Company’s accounting positions and communicating them to varying levels in the organization and external auditors and certain internal controls
- Serve as the finance organization’s subject matter expert and key point of contact for international stakeholders on revenue accounting, ensuring desirable revenue accounting results. Provide revenue recognition guidance on our most complex revenue transactions through enablement of the Technical Revenue Team and participating in contract reviews
- Provide thought leadership to key business partners and collaborators in Sales, Sales Ops, Business Development, Legal and FP&A on structuring complex deals to optimize revenue recognition while maintaining compliance. Lead regional trainings on how to apply revenue recognition guidelines for SaaS and on-premise offerings
- Draft technical revenue memos to document key revenue conclusions and lead the continued improvement of the Company’s revenue-related policies
- Prepare revenue checklists prepared for material contracts, which document technical revenue considerations related to each deal and ensure compliance with our revenue recognition policies
- Work closely with Confluent’s external auditors to ensure approved revenue policies are adhered to, align on new and developing revenue topics and transactions
- Drive process improvements as they relate to the contract review and the overall Quote to Cash process
- Understand commissions accounting, the eligibility of components, and how to book and review additions to deferred commissions and the associated amortizations
Our take
Confluent is a commercial company built on top of the open-source Apache Kafka project. Confluent and Kafka have developed a streaming data technology that processes massive amounts of information in real-time.
The streaming database technology was developed at LinkedIn as a way of moving massive amounts of messages. The company decided to open-source that tech in 2011, and Confluent launched as the commercial arm in 2014.
While the base open-source component remains available for free download, it doesn’t include the additional tooling the company has built to make it easier for enterprises to use Kafka. Confluent's value add is in those additional tools, including a cloud version of the product and a marketplace for sharing extensions to the platform.
Confluent expanded strategic partnerships with Microsoft and acquired Immerok, and in 2023 expanded its cloud platform. 2024 saw further product expansions with the launch of the Confluent Migration Accelerator, all exemplifying how the company is living up to its name by rocket-boosting the benefits of Apache Kafka integration for companies.
