Role
Who you are
- 6+ years of professional experience in backend software development
- Strong proficiency in Golang and preferably Java/Kotlin
- Proven experience integrating various AI/ML models into production backend systems
- Practical experience with prompt engineering
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes)
- Preferred experience
- Experience building backend systems designed for complex agentic workflows or long-running conversational states
- Familiarity with foundational LLM concepts such as retrieval-augmented generation (RAG)
- Practical experience developing or managing MCP servers (Managing Conversational Protocols). Familiarity with Agent-to-Agent (A2A) communication protocols and multi-agent system design
- Experience with event-driven architecture and message queues (e.g. Kafka)
What the job involves
- We are seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to build and scale the core infrastructure for our next-generation AI-driven products
- You will be responsible for designing and implementing high-performance, reliable backend services that integrate various AI models, manage complex conversational states and ensure robust observability of our AI workflows
- You will be working on critical product initiatives such as:
- Agentic Personalization: Building personalized product experiences for thousands of frontline workers driven by intelligent agents
- Agentic Assistance: Creating powerful, context-aware AI assistants to boost productivity of thousands of frontline workers
- You'll design, develop, and maintain scalable and fault-tolerant backend services that power our AI applications
- Apply advanced prompt engineering techniques to optimize model performance, manage context windows, and ensure reliable, high-quality responses
- Implement model integration patterns to connect and orchestrate various external and internal services
- Develop Agent-to-Agent (A2A) protocol communication strategies for complex multi-agent architectures
- Implement systems for Managing Conversational Protocols (MCP servers) and Agent-to-Agent (A2A) protocol to handle and maintain long-running, stateful interactions
- Define and implement observability standards for AI applications, including metrics for latency, cost, token usage, drift, and user-perceived quality
- Implement logging, tracing, and monitoring tools to quickly diagnose and troubleshoot issues in the end-to-end AI pipeline
- Collaborate with ML Scientists and Data Scientists to transition prototypes and models into production-ready, high-availability services
- Ensure the security, reliability, and performance of all production systems
- Participate in code reviews, architectural discussions, and technical strategy planning
- Mentor junior engineers and champion best practices in backend development and MLOps
Our take
Since launching in 2014, Staffbase has grown into a major name in the internal communications niche. Its platform is used by the likes of Samsung, ALDI, DHL, and Domino’s to create branded, mobile-first communication and information sharing tools which can access a company’s intranet from anywhere.
Staffbase has managed to set itself apart to some extent from the range of other internal communication apps like Slack and Teams by focusing on building a product tailored towards dedicated internal communication teams, rather than taking a more general approach.
This is proving to be a good decision as, with the shift to remote and hybrid working, the last few years have seen Staffbase gather serious momentum. A 2021 merger with Canadian competitor Banantang has been followed up by a series of major funding rounds and a rise to unicorn status. As well as this, it’s been expanding its own product portfolio through a number of strategic acquisitions as it looks to stay ahead of the competition.
