Role

Who you are

  • 5+ years of software development experience
  • Experience working with and refactoring large codebases
  • Experience with PHP, and preferably other languages such as Go or Node.js
  • Experience with ORMs and relational databases
  • The desire to work across team boundaries to understand the needs of our product development teams, and partner with infrastructure teams

What the job involves

  • The Web Foundations team is responsible for providing a delightful developer experience for our product engineers. We maintain and support the core services and frameworks used by our development teams, enabling developers to provide a world-class experience to our users
  • We’re looking for a Senior Engineer to help us modernize our API Monolith written in PHP and its supporting services, to help us improve the user and developer experience
  • This will include making constant improvements to our current frameworks and pipelines, as well as uncovering new opportunities to improve our systems and processes
  • Own and operate key services in support of the API Monolith
  • Modernize our ORM layer
  • Bring the Api Monolith into alignment with modern PHP frameworks and best practices
  • Enable product teams to wholly own and operate portions of the API Monolith, and eventually split isolated domains into separate services
  • Provide tooling, training, and guidance to product engineers on best practices and design patterns
  • Participate in design, code, and architecture reviews

Our take

Quizlet has built a large-scale business around simple-to-share and simple-to-use products. Its free flashcard maker helps students prepare for exams. Those insights fuel Quizlet Plus, the startup’s subscription product that charges an annual fee for access to more features, including tutoring services.

After a long period of runaway growth, during which the company achieved a $1 billion valuation, Quizlet has been somewhat buffered by the general market downturn affecting the tech sector in 2022, which hit EdTech particularly heavily. It has responded by a shakeup of its leadership team, appointing AirBnB and Starship Technologies veteran Lex Bayer.

With an entrepreneurial management team and a strong user base of over 60 million students and teachers, Quizlet seems likely to weather the current economic situation and resume its growth in the near future.
