Role
Who you are
- Master’s degree or higher in AI, Computer Science, or a related field
- At least four years of experience in productionizing machine learning models, preferably using Docker and Kubernetes
- Proven track record of scaling development and adoption of machine learning in an organization
- Strong Python skills
- Comfortable with taking responsibility, showing initiative, and working independently
- Ability to think outside the box and an anything-is-possible mindset
- Quality control: commitment to excellence, performance, and efficiency
- ...and for bonus points: you have experience with Terraform
What the job involves
- As a ML Platform Engineer at Picnic, you’ll work on building the tools and infrastructure to help our Machine Learning Engineers quickly build and productionize robust machine learning models
- Working closely with ML Engineers and analysts, you’ll identify opportunities to improve the machine learning lifecycle at Picnic. From tools that improve model experimentation, to automations that simplify model deployment
- You will collaborate with other platform teams at Picnic to make sure our tech stack remains aligned with the rest of the Tech team, while building and integrating the solutions that solve the problems unique to machine learning systems
- Automate machine learning model retraining and deployment
- Set up infrastructure for model inference, supporting deployment strategies like A/B testing and shadow testing
- Improve monitoring in order to exercise operational excellence for our machine learning models
- Simplify and standardize usage of tools by developing and inner-sourcing Python packages
- Recommendation systems: generating useful in-app grocery suggestions for our customers
- LLMs: automate systems to categorize and resolve Customer Success tickets
- Outlier detection: low-latency decision support systems to prevent fraud
- Time-series forecasting: improving the operational efficiency throughout our supply chain, from our automated fulfilment center to our last mile delivery
- Work closely with ML engineers to identify opportunities, define use cases, and scope out the requirements
- Own your own project from inception to production
- Develop tools and enhancements for our ML Platform

Thanks to its ‘own the supply chain’ model and daily delivery routes (as opposed to on-demand delivery), the company is able to run a low-cost business targeted at the mass market, rather than premium buyers.
One of the major factors in the company’s rampant growth since 2015 is its capacity for free delivery, enabled by these daily delivery routes. The company's fleet has grown from 4 vans to more than 1,000 electric vehicles, cutting down on carbon emissions as it serves its hundreds of thousands of users.
The company's impressive funding - which has been heavily backed by the likes of The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the sum of 1.4 billion euros in funding - has enabled Picnic to expand beyond The Netherlands into Germany, France, and further afield. Picnic is well set to see continued growth and expansion as it further disrupts the grocery delivery market.
